About the Author

Dean Yeagle started in animation in Philadelphia. After marrying Barbara (also an artist, and musician) and the birth of their daughter Becky, the need for actual money drove them to New York, and a job as designer, animator and eventually director with one of the top animation houses in NYC. In 1986, with partner Nancy Beiman, he opened Caged Beagle Productions, Inc., a full-service animation studio. Dean was named Animator of the Year by the National Cartoonists Society.

Well, let's get this part over with... Is it sexy? Yes. Is it funny? Yes. But don't expect anything more than mild T&A. What you can expect is a character study of a pretty and beautifully drawn woman in a style that seems to have gone away. You also get to see Dean Yeagle's other works. Before this book I had no idea he drew the dog & thief as well as the cop from the Cookie Crisp cereal! The other works in this book really showcased his wide range of talents wonderfully! So, if you are looking for some amazingly drawn pictures...the bulk of which are funny and mildly sexy then this book is for you! I would definitely recommend it!

 It appears that there was an earlier edition of Melange before this. There's a "+32 pages" sticker pasted on the cover for this edition published by Akileos. The book's a 160-page hardcover.Dean Yeagle is a cartoonist and character designer with background in animation. This book collects his diverse character designs, nude female figure drawings, pin-ups and his Playboy cartoons with some unused roughs.The art and characters are beautiful. About half the book is on the character Mandy, a playful busty blonde - she's on the cover with her dog. Even the Playboy cartoons are amusing, and I can't say the same for other artists.It's a great book for those into character designs and pin-up art.(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Having purchased the original printing of Dean Yeagle's Mélange, I was pleased to see that the new release not only had much better color reproduction - very vibrant, full-page illustrations - but it also had much better distribution with subjects sorted accordingly. Of course, our beloved Mandy gets a lion's share of the book and the additional pages, while some are familiar versions from previous 'Scribblings' editions, are never-before seen/published sketches.If you don't have this edition of Mélange, I urge you to purchase it to add to your collection. If you already own the first copy, buy this one anyway. The price isn't too bad for what you're getting. (28MAY2011)

There are a number of Dean Yeagle's publications out there -- five "Scribblings", a Sketchbook, three Mandy books, some others -- but all are fairly slim volumes and fairly pricey for their size (even before several of them went out of print and got even more pricey!). MELANGE is a great opportunity to see what Yeagle's work is all about and a better value for your buck. There's a lot of his Mandy character, plus Playboy cartoons both published and rejected, animation, sketches, finished works, other characters, and more. Good art, good value, good book. The only downside is that you may decide you need to have all Yeagle's other stuff too ...

It's a great book with many great works in it and I enjoy it.The extra red marker was an unfortunate bad surprise when I looked at the cover.I don't know how this could have happened.When I received the book I noticed an off color to parts of the red text and design on the front of the book and then realised it was actually red permanent felt that had been drawn on to the front. I'm a bit upset over this and I'm completely baffled by how this could have happened and still been shipped to me. This ruins any collection value and is very difficult to remove. However, it is still a great book and I'm happy with what's inside of it.EDIT: I managed to get the marker off with a little bit of ingenuity.

Purely delightful and such a joy to look at these innocent and coy artistic renderings, a great book for anyone who loves 'good girl' art and illustration and art in general. I will buy more of these in the future.

Dean Yeagle has been one of my favorite artists for years, and this book confirms why. Filled with sexy drawings, fun cartoons, and great commentary, this artbook is a definite treat and I am delighted to have it in my collection!

I loved this book, especially how Salisbury captures the "Americaness" of the young protagonist. The section in which he allows himself to be used as bait in a horrible K-( experiment was hard to read, but worth it.His use of Island patois among the characters is a convincing character device.As a side note, some of it's readers might enjoy Barstow Bones, in which an Asian-American college student hides out in a post-Pearl Harbor Barstow movie theater while a while a gang of white teen-age thugs, pursue him. When newsreel footage of a Japanese Zero being shot down show s on the screen, Tommy cheers along with the rest of the audience. He is, like the young protagonist of Eyes of the Emperor, first of all an American.

Eyes of the Emperor by Graham Salisbury is the novelized version of WWII dog test trials that used young Japanese men as "bait", believing that the Japanese exuded a different scent than Americans. These trials were authorized by President Roosevelt. Although this book was a YA adult book (I read in less than 3 hours), it was interesting enough to keep me glued to the pages! 5 stars

About a third of my way through but felt confident that my review would be valid. Very well written bringing out the essence of people's thoughts and feelings in that timeframe.

I recommend this to anyone interested in WW II stories, and particularly people from Hawaii, or of Asian ancestry.A thoroughly engaging book. I live in Hawaii, and I know lots of people just like the men described here.It seems laughable now that intelligent people once thought that Asians smelled different that Caucasians, but here's the story, folks.

good book

I have always been interested in World War II. Reading of the sacrifices the people made and the suffering they went through and reading of their determination and bravery is an inspiration to me. I would recommend this book to all as we need to learn of others strength in trials that we may be able to withstand our trials also and those that may come our way.
