I have underlined many passages in this wonderful book. I was a student of Pir Vilayat in the Sufi Order for 25 years and he often talked about how we can become capable of participating in the divine programming. Patten states something very similar - "the evolution of consciousness is as real and significant as biological evolution.....that evolution can become aware of itself." He talks of the importance of integrating both inner and outer work. Often times spiritual seekers focus too much on inner experiences at the expense of a balanced life in the world. Patten also emphasizes the importance of developing a consciousness that can encompass multiple points of view, and enabling ways of compassionate relationship with those who have very different outlooks from our own. He describes an integral consciousness which "tries to account for and honor every dimension of development and evolution and experience." I share Patten's outlook that for there to be significant change in major problems in the world, it will require many people developing the capacity of integral consciousness. He calls these people "evolutionaries." This book is filled with optimism based on a solid foundation. I recommend it highly.Donald E. I was so excited to get this book. As someone who has learned from Terry, mainly through online courses over the past few years, I have gained a huge respect for him as a person and as a teacher.
