I teach genealogy as a night-school class at a local high school. I always get at least one student every time who thinks that, if they just can find all the necessary web sites, they can - like ancestry dot com commercials tend to lead them to believe - have their entire family history show up on their computer with just a few clicks. To say nothing of all the bits of inaccurate and/or unsourced information out there on various web sites, posted family pedigrees, and so on. These folks tend to get very, very disappointed when I tell them far more is involved than just 'clicking on a few leaves.'I suspect less than 1% of all records out there that have genealogical value have been transcribed for computer access, and even fewer documents have actually been scanned and made available for online access. Someone who is truly interested in conducting family history research needs to find an awful lot of information off line. The days of visiting archives and looking through books, records, and microfilm aren't over. You're still going to have to order copies of vital records from archives, vital records offices, county clerk's offices, and so on.Claudia's book will help you take the first steps in starting your off line search. As a professional genealogist I have done almost every search for documents that Claudia shares in her book. Too bad I did not have this book earlier for it might have made me more efficient and focused. Claudia gives lots of examples of how to find documents and photos of what they look like. She also reveals what these documents have added to her knowledge of her ancestor. She moves from using online indexes, extracts and transcriptions to how to seek out the original record and where it can be found. It is an easy read and makes a great checklist for finding documents. Claudia uses examples from Washington State and other areas around the country showing that a genealogical search can take you just about anywhere.

I agree that not all the information one would like to find about ancestors is available online, or that the online abstracts and summaries are always as complete or as informational as paper records. The book does provide help in understanding where some of these records may be found. However, the book appears to be published by the author and is not quite professional. Most of the images are blurry and hard or impossible to read. Much of the material consists of specific examples, rather than giving multiple examples to demonstrate the gamut of information available. Also, the index lists page numbers for information that are incorrect.

The author Claudia C. Breland is also the author of a monthly online genealogy newsletter. I'm a big fan of her newsletter and it was through the newsletter that I learned of the book. I have had the privilege of attending various genealogy workshops where Ms. Breland has lectured. She has a vast amount of knowledge and expertise in genealogy research and I could hardly wait for this book to become available. The book is a very easy read as it is only 131 pages. Every page is chalked full of valuable information. I especially found the chapter on Naturalization Records to be most helpful. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone researching their family history looking for new sources of vital information. I keep this book next to my computer and refer to it almost daily. I'm anxiously looking forward to Ms. Breland's next book "Genealogy Offline 2" hoping it will be made available soon.

The story of Richard is really inspiring. Somehow I found about him, google his name and found some youtube videos about him.I found those inspiring and decide to buy the book.While the most meaninful part of the story was there on the videos, there are some additional thoughts and experiences from the author that worth reading about.This isn't a very profound book that changes how to do things differently and doesn't present new ideas, but It inspires and invites you to do your own story.

Richard Montanez made it out of extreme poverty with humanity and wisdom. He has the delightful ability to frame his past mistakes and successes on the way up to the top of corporate world without letting his success rule his life. He is truly what the Japanese call a Sensei, a revered teacher and national treasure. He shares his secrets that made him successful in a world he knew nothing about. He writes to school children, teens, adults, yes, me and you. I loved loved this book.

Very profound. Sometimes the simple things can be so on target. Well done and well worth the read.

This book is inspirational for those who need encouragement as they reach their goals. In my opinion, it would be a good book to teach at big corporations, so the management could learn how each of their employees matter.

This book points out aptly how several of our values, such as mercy and justice as one several pairs, come in conflict. It isn't so much a good value vs. a bad value in many cases, but that our values actually conflict. He covers this subject and hopefully contributes to the perception that most people intend to do good but simply weigh one value as higher than the other. This explains why, for instance, a judge may sentence a rich youth less severely than a poor youth, viewing the crime as either a mistake deserving mercy or a crime deserving justice, depending on the judge's own personal evaluation of or affinity for the youth.

There are no books on the market that address morality that way that this book does. Not the Bible. Not my university textbook on ethics. None. It's one thing to talk about moral issues and take sides with them, but it is another thing entirely to talk about solid moral principles that can guide you in making moral decisions based on reason instead of blind faith. This is a book that does the talking.If you want to find out what a religion or a moral philosophy is really made of, nothing will put it to a test more than a moral dilemma will, and this book is chock full of examples of real life moral dilemmas. Some of those moral dilemmas are things most people wouldn't even think of as moral dilemmas -- justice vs mercy for example. One dilemma I like (to paraphrase) was the one about the highway patrol officer who comes upon a truck wreck where the driver is irremovably pinned down in the cab and a fuel-fed fire is starting to blaze out-of-control. The driver asks the officer to kill him before he is fried alive. What would you do and how would it be a moral decision?It is not a perfect book, for example, there was the issue of what is truth. Truth and fact are not the same thing. Truth is whatever people *believe* to be fact, whether or not what they believe in really is a fact or not. Truth is not a reliable yardstick by which to gauge morality by. That might seem like nitpicking with words, but the most common cause of distress of clients in counseling is confusing facts with truth. Knowing the difference between the two is important to making proper moral decisions, otherwise you might be basing your decision on an illusion.It also didn't cover the issue of punishment. The topic of punishment often comes up in moral discussions as a deterrent from being immoral. If a person needs to be deterred by force from being immoral, does that deterred person become a moral person then, or are they a person only putting on an act of being moral, only to resort to immorality in private when nobody is looking and they can be the "real me"? So is there no other purpose of punishment, besides being a poor deterrent? Most philosophies of punishment I've heard have very immoral reasoning at their cores and therefore should be discussed in every discussion on moral or ethics. Therefore any religion or moral philosophy based on deterrent is an immoral religion or philosophy.

Not a bad read if you're looking into ways to break down moral decisions. The book provides a clear way to identify what kind of dilemma is in front of you and by the end provides the author's insight on which decisions seem to be most beneficial. However the criteria for decision making as the author hopes the readers to take in by the end of the book is at times muddled and subjective. Your idea of utilitarianism may be to save the bus full of children but my idea of it may be to save the one doctor who might go on to cure cancer. In the end all the reader is left with is the understanding that there are decisions which they will face with no right (or rather wrong) choice and that the choice they do make will define their ethical character. Whether you choose mercy over justice or the individual over society doesn't matter as long as you have the common sense to make the decision yourself and stand by it. Whether you need to read this book or not to make "tough" decisions depends on how hard set your core values are but you'll have nothing to lose from reading it.

Fantastically written - easy to read while still providing in-depth ideas that make you think.

Provided a good framework for decision-making in ethical

This is the book my ethics class is based on. This author knows his subject well and I enjoyed reading the real-life scenarios presented. We have all faced right vs. right situations in our lives and this was very informative and though provoking.
