The Big Moo: Stop Trying to Be Perfect and Start Being Remarkable, by The Group of 33 Seth Godin

From Publishers Weekly

Godin derived the title for this engaging anthology of business homiletics from his marketing manifesto Purple Cow, which extolled the importance of garish new products that grab customers' attention. Phrased as a feel-good kindergarten platitude ("you are not ordinary/In fact, you're remarkable"), the principle seems a harmless nod to fancy-free individualism. But set in an adult business context of constant "change" and cutthroat price competition, where "winning the game has absolutely nothing to do with hard work and paying your dues" and "a constant stream of industry-busting insights and remarkable innovations" is the only guarantee of survival, the exhortation to uniqueness becomes terrifying and demoralizing. Fortunately, the cacophony of unsigned contributions from a "Group of 33" writers (Malcolm Gladwell and Tom Peters are in there somewhere) includes more reassuring and realistic lessons. There's a lot of New Economy histrionics ("They say, 'sure, we need change'"/ "I say, 'we need revolution now'"), but also comparatively restrained parables about marketing and customer service. Some writers note that competent imitation of proven ideas is often a better strategy than innovation, that self-effacing Bill Murray did better than self-aggrandizing Chevy Chase, and that, yup, hard work and paying your dues does pay off. The selections are for the most part brief and pithy, and while they don't add up to a coherent viewpoint, browsers are bound to find something that hits a chord.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Originally I rented this book’s audio edition from my library so I could listen to it while exercising. Loved the book so much that I purchased the hardcover. This may be Seth Godin’s best book , even better than the ‘purple cow’. And, yes, It is Godin’s book because he conceived the idea and talked all 33 (or better: 32 + himself) into writing this book. The book’s concept is a genius. The topic is the Big Moo, which cannot be defined by one single person. The Big Moo is not a riddle but the fluent four dimensional quality of an extreme purple cow, which keeps on having purple calves (“the calves” are my personal definition, Godin does not say so in his book). Logically according to their different home environments and (business) circumstances, these calves need different “nourishments to grow”, just like Austrian or Swiss cows who live on high pastures eat different foods than cows in the flatlands of the Netherlands, Indian ‘holy’ cows, or even yaks in Nepal or Tibet.By inviting so many different brilliant contributors, Godin circles the topic, allows different concepts, perspectives, and facets to shine, which together create the puzzle of a portrait of the Big Moo, a purple cow which keeps having calves. My favorite stories (I listened to them three times)• How to be a failure• This is your first test• The remarkable Gertrude Bell• The one thing you can’t download• Ten Things Smart Start-ups Know• Fire the GatekeepersBittersweet was the story, “Tear down this wall”. My kid brother Michael had told me that the wall was about to come down in 1988. Since I had had traveled Berlin, seen the wall, and even crossed over at Checkpoint Charlie, I told Michael to “not be silly.” About a year later, when indeed the wall came down, I stood corrected. Sadly Michael, my brilliant brother, died four years later from Multiple Sclerosis. Still, it made me proud again that he saw the signs nobody else saw.5 stars for the Purple Cow and 6 for the Big MOO,Gisela Hausmann, author & blogger

For people who have read my other reviews, or heard me speak, you will know I have a great fondness for author Seth Godin. I have read his books for years, and his thoughts and messages are always valuable. He certainly is not the deepest thinker when it comes to marketing, but he does offer a fresh approach as to how to effectively get your message heard. The Big Moo is a Seth Godin edited book. He invited 33 business, marketing, thought leaders, etc. to write a short essay (usually 1-2 pages each) on how they think businesses will prosper in the next five, ten, fifteen years. Seth never does anything in the norm, and this book is no exception. When you read the 33 essays, they are uncredited. While he does tell you who the 33 authors are, he does not tell you what they wrote. I'm not sure what his purpose was, and I'm not sure it matters whether you know or don't know. It is just Seth being Seth. The message that the book puts forth is the fact that you, or your company, can't just be good, or even great. You have to be remarkable if you are going to stand out from the crowd. This is a quick read, and I do recommend it. As is true with all of Seth's books, if you walk away with one idea that helps make you remarkable, it is worth the $19.95 that you pay for the book. By the way, it should be mentioned that all of the profits generated by this book are going to charity, and none of the 33 thought leaders were paid for their essays.

The big Moo is a small book with short stories about "how to be remarkable". Each of the stories are written by one of the 33 'famous' authors and business 'gurus'. Some of the well known authors are Seth Godin, Malcolm Gladwell, Dan Pink, Tom Peters, etc etc. Some of the stories were interesting, most of them were somewhat average. A lot were like short motivational stories without a huge amount of insight. For insights, its probably better to pick up a book with a consistent theory supported by e.g. research studies. The most positive thing about the book is that all the income goes to 3 charities. From that perspective, its an ok book and buying it will be a good thing. All in all, worth reading, but not remarkable.

This book will motivate you to be remarkable, innovate, embrace change, take risks, and be awesome. Although some of the advices were worth their gold, I find most of the advices in this book too generic and vague.

I purchased this book prior to reading Purple Cow which wasn't a mistake per se, but I read a few pages of this then decided to purchase and read Purple Cow before ultimately tackling the Big Moo.Most of Seth Godin's work centers around a premise to get the reader to really think then eventually act on that thinking. This title is no different--it's a collection of essays compiled by some of the best marketing and business minds around in an attempt to get you to think about your current (or possibly a past) situation and what changes you may wish to make to become remarkable instead of ordinary. It's a quick read which delivers on its objective to generate actionable thought. It's also fun to try to figure out which author wrote each essay as he/she isn't identified for each.Highly recommended as a sequel to Purple Cow.

The book consists of 33 three short essays all written by different authors also known as The Group of 33. Each author provides an anecdote, a story or straight forward advice on how to transform yourself or your company from 'average' to 'remarkable'. Whether it's marketing, starting a business, or self-improvement, everyone will find something to ponder. It is a pleasure to read (multiple times) and makes a great gift. Personally, I have a dozen of bookmarks in this book, and every once in a while I re-read some of the essays for both motivation and to analyze and improve my priorities.

I normally don’t write reviews but I was so beyond disappionted by this book I felt it necessary. This book advertises itself as a great transition for new vegans into veganism while also being a great reset for existing vegans....that couldn’t be any further from the truth. As a vegan for 4 years now I found this book unnecessarily lacking in creativity, flavor and sense. The amount of prep work that goes into these dishes is in no way compensated in taste. If I was new to this vegan journey and this book was all I had to reference I would immediately be turned off. I found myself constantly trying to rationalize the lack of flavor in these dishes....was there really a reason I was opening a can of beans and throwing them into a taco without a pinch of cumin, paprika, ANYTHING? The answer was no. I actually ended up returning the book in the end because I was truly outraged at how overhyped and underwhelming the whole experience was. There are so many other great vegan cookbooks out there that beyond deliver; Oh She Glows, Wicked Healthy and Thug Kitchen to name a few....please give those a try before you waste money on this.

I've bought 2 of her resets online prior to the publication of this book, which is why I was so excited for this! I love all the meal prep help, which has helped me stay on track during the week. However, I was disappointed in the book. I often felt hungry throughout the day and that many recipes were bland. One breakfast was - if memory serves me right - 2 oranges. It is worth mentioning, there were a lot of good/fun/tasty recipes that I will continue to use and meal prep has, thanks to the author, become part of my life.

I absolutely LOVE this book. I used to have so much fun meal planning but ever since having my son a year ago I have not had the time or energy to enjoy it the way I used to. Not only does this book do all the work, I actually love 95% of the recipes. I am not picky but I have a few things I dislike that somehow weeds out a ton of vegan recipes. I don’t like when a savory dish is made sweet with fruit or something else (I can tolerate sweet potatoes but not every dang day) and I’m not big on mushrooms. The few recipes I’m not a huge fan of I feel the ingredient could very easily be swapped out. Now I just need her to make a 365 day reset so I’m good all year!

Not only are the pictures fabulous, the layout and meal plan instructions and shopping lists are fantastic! One of the easiest to follow meal plans with food you can easily make, will actually eat and absolutely enjoy! She has included such good additional information and helpful tips. I have already recommended this to several others and encourage you to see for yourself how wonderful this one is!

I have been doing the online Vegan Reset with Kim-Julie for several years. I was so excited when she announced that her book would be coming out. I just got it today and love it! My favorite part of the Vegan Reset program is the food prep -- I love having all my food prepped and ready to go. The recipes are easy to make and taste great! I personally love the chickpea "tuna" sandwich. I just made it today and it was great!

My wife and I have been vegan for a while now, and we bought this mainly to help with meal prep as we found ourselves dining out or making the same dishes often.I’m prepping day 4’s lunches for us right now, and so far the experience with the recipes has been truly lackluster. We’ve had to fix or adjust every recipe in some way, otherwise the dishes would’ve just tasted like plain cooked vegetables basically.Biggest problems:- you have to check the next day’s recipes if you need soaked cashews because the book doesn’t tell you the day before.- In two days they have you eat 4 sweet potatoes. Why? That is far too many sweet potatoes. It’s ridiculous.- Who makes tacos with plain cooked chickpeas, salt, optional herbs, a pinch of sea salt, raw tomatoes, and plain cooked vegetables. That’s not a taco, that’s just a bunch of plain cooked vegetables in a tortilla. A taco has seasoning of some sort - cumin, chilies, something.- the smoothies are anywhere from 1/4c to 1/2c off on the amount of liquid they require.- the chickpea cabbage boats would’ve been flavorless if we hadn’t fixed the recipe.- the chickpea cabbage boats called for a sauce made out of mustard and maple syrup. The chickpeas themselves had a single teaspoon of curry powder per serving with nothing else to form an actual sauce/flavor profile. This is not great: ended up turning the chickpeas into Chana masala and saying screw the sauce.- the loaded sweet potato sauce was trying to be a vegan cheese sauce and it failed miserably. There are some really good vegan cheese sauces on the Internet - there’s a nacho cheese sauce that uses sweet potatoes, carrots, and some other stuff that I would eat a thousand times over versus actually nacho cheese sauce, even if I wasn’t vegan.-the loaded sweet potatoes included too many sweet ingredients (cooked onions, carrots) along with asking the diner to consume 2 whole sweet potatoes.Overall, I’m finishing day 3 and prepping day 4, and we probably won’t use this book again after we finish this week out. This was a great idea, I really wanted the meal prep this book provides to work for us, but we like flavor and this is annoying.

I was very excited to engage with this book. I LOVE how in depth the shopping lists and prep instructions are, but I found by day two I was missing spices waaaay more than I was missing any animal products. There are some really good meals in here, but (as other commenters have mentioned), many of the meals are supremely bland, and with very little reason. If you do venture into this plan, I'd highly recommend spicing up some of the dishes that seem like they will be bland. Or tossing some low cal oil and vinegar onto your raw veggie mix. Ultimately there is a lot of value in the structure of the book, but this is not a good introduction to Vegan food. You get a lot of great nutrition here, but without a little more pizzazz, newcomers to a plant based diet will be turned way off.

I’m a spider, so what? Is a delightful series. This review is for the second book and while it is a very fun book, the reality of this series is you cannot read it out of order. Sometimes books will try to backfill and while this one does, it is insufficient for a reader who hasn’t had a chance to get familiar with the world and characters. Worse yet, the first book has an entirely different tone that shifts for book two. These tonal shifts are important to the overall story, so if you have not read book one yet, go back and read it.While book one acts as a backfill and introduction to the characters, book two see’s their paths and arcs start to take shape. While important, this change means the book is not insignificantly different from the first. Where as the first saw our spider struggling with every move, this book sees our spider starting to shape her future. The change is great, but also makes for a significantly different reading experience. While reading the first you actually wanted to know how she might get out of a situation, but the sense of danger changes entirely with the second book. Another shocking change with this book is the mysteries start to mount, while also giving glimpses of a wider plot.Character development continues too, including some dynamic changes. You may like the characters better in the first book, but the changes here are exchanging personality for plot development and the plot is a good hook. The first book also lacked any strong sense of drama, but book two fixes that in a big way. It is pretty impossible to avoid that this book is a set up for further books in the series, so if you read book 1 and are thinking about book 2, you should prepare yourself for book three. Most of what is worth saying about this series can be found in the book one reviews, this truly is a continuation and like the first book, is over all too quickly. These books are fun and if you enjoyed the first book you will probably enjoy this one, but if you did not enjoy the first book, the second book is not going to make any huge changes.

Unique take on the reincarnation/litrpg genre. A girl gets reincarnated as a monster, and not as a sexy or powerful one, but a weak tiny spider almost immediately in danger of getting cannibalized by her spider siblings and broodmother. The initial story is a unique solitary SURVIVAL tale that is slower paced and smaller scale in a good way, how often do you see that!? At one point just fighting a frog as a boss. But the battles are clever, stakes are high due to her fragile nature as a spider, her struggles with her monster existence fleshed out, and her tiny progress is depicted as satisfying. The evolution aspect was great too! A compelling form of character advancement, I was always excited to see what she'd evolve into next, something human MCs in other books simply can't. I originally read the manga, and since it was one of my all time favorite manga, I couldn't resist trying this light novel when I saw it on Amazon. Manga is better, easily 5 stars. Depicts the action better and cuteness of the MC better. In purely written form it comes across as mostly the MC's thoughts to herself and strategies for survival. I think something must have been lost in translation from Japanese. Also the parts from other characters point of views were not nearly as interesting as hers. Despite the world building I almost wish the author left those from other characters' perspectives out. On the plus, like with most light novels vs manga, the light novels cover the plot faster and are currently ahead in production than the manga.

"Wait just a minute! I won’t allow that. It’s too dangerous!"I hate Oka, so much. Subjectivly the "children" are in their thirties at this point in the story, and after more than a decade apart Oka comes out of nowhere and tries to boss them around, to the point where she orders them not to get stronger while she is obviously doing her damndest to increase her own strength. Even her manner of speaking is annoying. It feels like the author wants us to hate her, but she is so irritating that it detracts from the story. If it weren't for Oka, I'd give it five stars.

Our protagonist spider’s journey to survive and get stronger continues. But it seems there are complicated and worrisome forces behind the source of her strength. And she might be going a little crazy with talking to herself. And in the side story you get the sense that there is a lot going on in the shadows our secondary protagonist. How many of his fellow reincarnations have stuck to the straight and narrow?

Definitely shows that there's favoritism towards our darling spider girl. Once again we see that the gods love to watch the world burn, yet what surprised me the most are our intrepid incarnations. Definitely the teacher knows the truth, but whether that knowledge is for good or evil remains to be seen. While obviously the development of the two incarnations, Hugo and the Demon Lord, have to do with upbringing, I'm quite curious what happened to the others that are dead.

This series is one of my top three favorite light novels. This volume turned out to be an excellent read. Many of the happenings from the web novel make an appearance in a more polished manner, as well as some added scenes. I have pre-ordered volume 3 and I am excited for it's release in the near future.

I really enjoyed the world building and seeing our spider manipulate her environment to survive. I bought the 2nd book eagerly to see how she develops, but halfway through the author starts to gives up on that and takes the book in a new direction granting our spider all the powers she needs in an instant. The plot twist at the end completely killed it for me too. Who cares about our spider's situation now that we know how it all ends?

Alrighty, since i literaly just finished this, im still very much under the influence of the plot twists and the awesome direction this story is going... I'm hyped! Who's going to wait for the next part... It's going to have to be me right? But i don't wannaaa~... So yeah this is the feeling this book leaves you in. I need more. I want more. Feed me.

This book is written to singles contemplating marriage, to a good partner! It is written by a Christian husband and father using principles from the Bible as a guide.WHAT READERS CAN LEARN FROM THIS BOOK1. If you seek first God's kingdom and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33) and let this principle undergird your decision regarding whom you choose to marry and refuse to compromise on that, you will increase the likelihood of a much more fulfilling, spiritually enriching, and overall more satisfying marriage.2. Being "in love" is not a reliable criterion for marrying someone. Women are more likely to experience romantic love with dominant men, even though dominant men typically demonstrate less ability to express the kind of companionship, relational skills, and emotional attachment that women ultimately desire in a lifelong mate. If you simply follow your feelings, you are more likely fall in love with a guy who will thrill you for twelve to eighteen months as a boyfriend and then frustrate you for five to six decades as a husband.3. The average life span of infatuation is two years. The author recommends a couple not get engaged less than one year before meeting because infatuation has to run its course in order to really get to know a person, including his or her weaknesses, before getting married. Discerning a person's true character, values, and suitability for marriage is hard work that takes time, counsel, and a healthy dose of skepticism. Brain scans of people together for 28 months showed a more realistic view of their partner than those together for 8 months.4. Our culture embraces the mistaken notion that there is only one specific person who can complete us, and we will know who that person is by the intense feelings we have. Conversely, the Bible does not teach that there is only one right person for you. Instead, it teaches that there are wise and unwise choices, and that a man should search for a woman of virtuous character (Proverbs 31:10). Desirable traits include (but are not limited to) industriousness (31:13, 19, 22), compassion for others (31:20), a good reputation (31:28, 29, 31), and, most importantly, having reverence for the Lord (31:30). Most married Christian women desire their husbands to be godly, to have a good sense of humor, to be an involved dad, and to have a strong work ethic, among other traits.5. A single person should become involved in social situations where they are more likely to meet a qualified marriage partner, such as church, work, or introductions through family and friends.6. Relationships are unstable when they are based upon (6.1) romantic idealism, (6.2) physical attraction, or (6.3) domination of one by the other. (6.1) If you're a romantic idealist, you're going to become very disappointed when your partner focuses on his business or hobby. (6.2) A marriage based primarily on mutual physical attraction is a shaky foundation, because marriage is about growing old together more than it is about being young together. A passionate partnership can seem intimately intense and satisfying when two people enjoy it, and suffocating when just one of them wants it. (6.3) Some people become interested in a relationship only when they are terrorized by or are terrorizing their partner, for reasons often related to past wounds and bent personalities. These couples fight, argue, make each other miserable and afraid, and may even have vigorous makeup sex. Exhausted and spent, they peacefully coexist for another short season until routine sets in and they start the horror cycle all over again. These people need to get healed before they get married.7. The author believes you should never marry a person who is highly arrogant, is unwilling to forgive, or expresses anger with physical violence.8. A complementarian marriage is one in which the husband leads by being a loving servant (Ephesians 5:22-32).9. Compatibility is about having the most important things in common. Prior to marriage, dating couples should respect and appreciate their partner's personality and character. Morally, the Bible prohibits sex outside marriage (I Corinthians 6:15-20). Neuro-chemically, sex before marriage bonds two people through the outpouring of oxytocin before they can properly test and evaluate each other's character. Sexual intimacy will cloud a person's judgment about their partner. If they see something about their partner's behavior or character that gives them pause, they will be inclined to continue with the relationship because of their sexual bond10. Design some dates specifically to reveal each other's character. Going to the movies, biking through the park, and eating out may produce a certain level of affection, but it doesn't tell you how a man would face a medical crisis, what kind of courage a woman has, what values each person lives by, or what spiritual pursuit drives the other person. You can find out your date's true character by paying attention to how he or she treats people.11. Pornography is destructive because it teaches wrong information about women, that they like to do certain things and act in certain ways that they really do not. Porn trains men to bond with the images of many women's bodies in general, but not to bond with one woman (as a whole person) in particular.12. Never marry someone just because you have been having sex with him or her, or because you feel sorry for that person, or because you want your search for a marriage partner to be over.

This book was suggested to me as the best time. I was in a relationship for a year and a half. Engaged, looking at houses, already bought my dress but was not feeling the excitement a bride should feel. There were red flags but I thought surely our love will overcome. 5 months before the wedding. I called it of as I began to read the book.within two weeks he was already dating someone else. I was hurt at how quickly I was replaced but relieved that I didn't marry him. Today marks a yr since the breakup and I finally sat down and finished the book. My life is fuller because I learned not just from the relationship and what God c showed me but I learned from this book as well...I recommended it to ask my single and dating friends.. God bless

This book has blessed my soul in so many ways. It was a gift to me from my son, 18 at the time, and being a single Christian that was currently back in the rat race of dating, this book has caused me to "pump the breaks" and to get and put things into its proper perspective. I don't have many conversations with friends, family or stranger before this book is mentioned. I recommend it for singles, parents of teens, youth ministers, counselors, and even some married folk... Unfortunately, I feel Gary Thomas should send me royalties...not because I've promote this wonderful book to nearly everyone that I come in conversation with, but because it seems like he merely changed the names in several of the examples mentioned when he could've just said my name for a ton of the examples... Thank you Gary for sharing...I only wish you could've written it 30 years ago but your book has blessed several lives in my family... I will be using this book in my church life group that I lead.

Trying to find a book of real substance in the Christian Living section at the bookstore can be more challenging than finding a Young Adult novel that doesn’t include a post-dystopian, star-crossed, vampire couple dying from cancer. When my eyes fell upon The Sacred Search by Gary Thomas my initial reaction was, “Oh, fantastic. Another Christian dating advice book. I swear if I hear the word courtship one more time I will become a eunuch!” Okay, maybe not.But seriously, I’ve read dozens of Christian dating books and very few have ever made much of an impact. Many of them lack real depth and are often very “me” focused. I was ready to move on to another shelf when a couple things caught my eye about this one.First off, I’m a big fan of the author, Gary Thomas. If you’re unfamiliar with Thomas, he’s penned many thoughtful books on marriage, parenting, and spiritual formation. Second, the tagline intrigued me, “What if it’s not about who you marry, but why?” I knew I had to give it a read.
Thomas charitably dispels a lot of the common myths of Christian dating and marriage. He gives thoughtful, practical advice for the “sacred search” while never losing focus of the bigger picture which he believes is summed up perfectly in Matthew 6:33, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”In addition to be a husband and father for many years, Thomas has counseled countless couples, and unfortunately, watched many of them end in divorce. While there’s no exact formula to avoid divorce, he points out the common pitfalls people stumble into when selecting a spouse. His tone is always candid, direct, and conversational. His wisdom and maturity shines through in way that many other authors lack. And his advice is useful no matter where you currently are in life - single, in a relationship, or already married. Some of my favorite chapters included:The Religious Romance Lottery“…God will bring the right person to me at the right time. I’ll just sit back and wait” Yeah. Right. Because sitting around is usually the best way to guarantee something amazing will happen in your life. For some reason we think that it’s different with relationships and I’ll admit that I have been guilty of the same logic. But Thomas encourages readers to look beyond praying and waiting. Start living with intention, walk towards the music, and pursue love.Soul Mate or Sole Mate?I feel this one ties closely to the idea of same thought as Romance Lottery. Many people believe there is the “One” person whom God has predestined to be their spouse. It’s a romantic notion. But there’s a danger in this mindset since the only One we are truly destined for is our Lord. What You Don’t Know Really Can Hurt YouHe explores the impact of personal history, particularly how our sexual history can affect our relationships. He attempts to address all of the other baggage that growing up in post-sexual revolution culture brings with it.Other chapters break down the common marriage styles, helping the reader to do a little introspection and consider what’s really important in a relationship. It’s not about finding someone who is exactly like you, but someone who is compatible. There is a whole chapter dedicated to the importance of mutually agreed upon gender roles. It’s an issue that can completely derail a relationship, especially in Christian circles, if not agreed upon.He is also unafraid to address the raw, biological forces that come into play with attraction and romance. Too many pastors, Christian psychologists, and writers foolishly shy away from this topic. While he isn’t a scientist, I admire his willingness to recognize and discuss the significance biology plays in affection and love.I could go on and on since this book is full of little gold nuggets but you should check it for yourself. It’s quick, yet powerful read.
