Most critics agreed that Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother is an entertaining read—lively and humorous, written with the intent to shock. More controversial is Chua’s stereotyping of Chinese and Western cultures, not to mention her authoritarian parenting methods. Critics judged the book largely by asking the following questions: Should self-esteem come before accomplishment, or accomplishment before self-esteem? If the latter, should it be achieved by threats and constant monitoring? Chua’s teenage daughters are undeniably accomplished, but at what emotional cost? While some reviewers found that Chua’s technique borders on abuse and her writing was, at best, self-serving, others were impressed by her parenting results and opined that the West could learn a few things from this remarkably driven Chinese American mother.

As the daughter of a fierce Tiger Mother, I avoided this book for the longest time. This book was bittersweet for me. At moments it was hard to read, the stories mirroring my own experiences, albeit too close for comfort. I felt I would be doing a disservice to Amy Chua if I didn't complete this book, so I stuck with her.Resist the negative reviews out there, a lot of people judge this book before completing it. This is a story of a woman raising her children with her best intentions. Her method worked for one daughter and it didn't for the other. Writing this book took bravery and self awareness. She didn't have to share her story, but I'm so glad she did.

I'm a Japanese American mom of two children. I really enjoyed her book! I read the negative reviews and wonder if those people really read her book. Numerous times the author states about her self doubt on how she was raising her daughters and how she questioned her methods.I'm one of those parents that has always praised my children in whatever they do and I didn't want to criticize them for fear of hurting their feelings or ruining their self esteem but Mrs Chua's book helped me to realize that is okay to sometimes demand excellence from your children! And that sometimes they need to be called out when they are not trying their best. Do I think the author is the perfect parent? Of course not, no one has all the answers but we can still learn from each other.

This book plays into every asian stereotype. The author was clearly a spoiled brat who thought she had a strict childhood. Chua’s assumptions are way off on certain theories she has.

This is an interesting, if skewed perspective, on high performance parenting. Admittedly, most children, if left to their own devices, would prefer becoming entitled couch potatoes, however, helicopter parenting is no guarantee of a child future success. Tiger parenting may work in a culture that provides a comparable context for all members of a child's social network, such as the far east, but social outlets in the United States diffuse impact by providing incongruous frames of perspective. It is likely that an intelligent child will engage with peers, to compare filial obligations, and grow to resent Tiger parenting. Hard work and a good education indeed improve the probability that a child will enjoy a higher income than the average American, however, the marginal improvement is not tantamount to success if hard work and more education do not improve the child's quality of life, self-concept, and life satisfaction. In essence, know thy children before imposing tiger parenting upon them.

I bought this book on the recommendation from a friend and after reading a few chapters, and I already had enough.I cannot get pass this woman's own complexes which were brought on by hre Chinese parentage. She studied only what she thought would please her parents, majors which require route memorization and gurantee excellent grades if you study hard enough. She failed in the corporate world and thinking that she is as gifted and adequate for the same job her husband, fails miserably at the interview realizing that she cannot hold her as high of a level of conversation as her husband's colleagues.Then, having failed to achieve as high success as she thought that she would, she decides to write about her experience parenting her kids, the Chinese style way. After of course, in overachieving Chinese student fashion, admitting that others have beat her to writing about Chinese culture, such as Amy Tang.Her descriptions of family's journey and parenting style are interesting. It seems to me that her and another extremely-scucessfull Chinese-American parents can owe their success to the laziness and brivery of American parenting. Contrasting what she considers such parenting success. This is the norm in Asia.If you like to read books to analyze people's personal inefficacies and psychological shortcomings, then buy this book. If you want to read a real talented writer's book, then spend your money on books like the Joy Luck Club instead.

Growing up, books were forbidden in her house and so the library became a haven and she began to read every author from A to Z in English Literature. She applied to Oxford and to her surprise got in as the "working class" experiment. Jeanette then writes her first book, Oranges are Not the Only Fruit, when she was 24. It will make a big difference.I once heard that if you don't deal with the trauma of your past, that the trauma will find you and make you deal with it. Well that is what happened to Jeanette. She sunk into a type of madness, became depressed and emerged forever changed. When Jeanette decides to go on with her life she then makes the decision to find her birth mother.Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal is an amazing memoir. It is not told in a linear fashion but it is full of life and passion. Complex, yet simply told, Winterson bares her soul, telling her readers that she never learned how to love nor how to be loved. Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal is an explanation of her book, Oranges and a confession of a very painful past. She divulges her tumultuous past with style, wit and grace all the while showing her readers, wisdom and the strength to endure. I was so inspired and riveted to Jeanette's story and have many passages of wisdom marked in my book. This memoir is deeply personal to Winterson and to me, as the reader. I felt I was looking into the window of her soul."Nobody can feel too much, though many of us work very hard at feeling too little.Feeling is frightening.Well, I find it so."Pg. 187

Ever run across a book and an author that just bends your mind? This is how I felt as soon as I started the audio unabridged version of this book, and so had to buy the paperback as well. It is read by the author and what a reading it is. I cannot remember when I have delighted in a book as much as I have this one and especially the vocal done by the author herself.It's a hard story. Much of the early part is a little hard to take, but sometimes it seems that people go through tough things and come out stronger on the other end. This seems to be the case with the woman who took charge of her education at Cambridge, and then became the author of many books, one of which became a TV presentation.Having never heard of Jeanette Winterson made it all the more interesting. There is such talent out in the world that we've never heard of and when we find them, when they touch us with that special touch, we are instantly changed for the better. Since I am a huge audible.com fan and am constantly downloading books there, this book was a recommendation by them and I'm so glad they did.I delighted in virtually every word, every inflection, and how love prevails, even when it doesn't seem like love. It all depends on our perspective.I cannot recommend this book enough and especially the unabridged audiobook. Bravo!

Jeanette Winterson's way of describing the almost indescribable brought tears to my eyes more than once. All my life, I've searched for these words to describe being an orphan and, after that, being abandoned. The life of forever seeking a lost part of yourself, of not knowing how to love and the crippling, incapacitating fear of loss. The poetry of her language is breathtaking and I finished reading with a sigh...Jeanette Winterson understands and speaks for all the lost ones.

Even if, like me, you are not a fan of Jeanette Winterson, you might want to give this book a read. It's not your typical memoir, but then, Jeanette Winterson's story is not your typical biography either. She was adopted at six weeks of age as an only child living with a fanatically religious mother. Cruelty and sometimes isolation ensued (being tossed into the "coal hole" or left out on the doorstep overnight), certainly not the fare the average British child grows up having endure. But endure she does. In the end, the craziness of her upbringing becomes a rather dark gift -- one that Jeanette Winterson, herself, is willing to recognize when later she meets her biological mother and finds she cannot bear to hear the criticism heaped by her bio-mother on her monstrous adopted mother. I found this memoir more than touching -- for me it was a fascinating glimpse into working class England circa 1960s, it was a poignant and sometimes searing glance into the human soul -- this book vacillates between humor and horror, between pleaure and pain.
