As a person who is very much into the un-talked about labor history of the United States, and who was somewhat familar with the event, and who has purchased books from Arcadia before I knew I had to get a copy of this book.Before I go any further I should state that Arcadia Publishing through it's "Images of America" series usually does not do books on historical events, what Arcadia usually does is publish books with spartan text and lots of photos about neighborhoods etc.Now let's get to event, On March 25, 1911 a fire broke out at the Asch Building, where on the 8th, 9th and 10th floors the Triangle Shirtwaist Co. was located, the company was already known for it's anti-union attidude. The company employed young immigrants(many in thier teens) as makers of shirwaists as many employees and machines as possible were packed into the factory.As the fire spread and the 8th 9th and 10th floors became increasingly hot, mass comfusion and panic reigned the females and males many who were no more than 16 attempted to leave the building via a door there was one problem, the management had the door locked!Others attempted to exit the building via a fire escape, the problem was that the fire escape, led only to the 2nd floor, many attempted to jump from the 2nd floor fire escape only to be impaled on pits that were located in the basement.The NYFD arrived within minutes, and used the then new high pressure hoses, and indeed was able to put the fire out in 20 minutes, sadly the ladder from the so-called "hook and ladder" reached only to the 6th floor as a result 146 employees jumped to thier deaths.The firemen along with the police were overcome emotionally because as many as 4,5, and 6 bodies at a time were landing on the side walks, so many bodies were landing that they crashed through the fire nets and landed on the side walk.Needless to say this book is difficult to get through as you are seeing photos of the dead at a makeshift morgue at a pier because there was so many dead that the actual morgue could not hold them.It is also difficult to get through as you see photos of loved ones who are sent to identify the dead, neverthess this one of the best books I ever had, I urge you to get this book.You won't be any happier, but you will get a very good idea in ways that words can't convey why unions are needed, indeed even if you are anti-union and remain so you will be a better person for having bought this book.
Images of America books are excellant, not only the photographs are really good but they are well written and concise .They are good primers to start with when you do research and the photos are invaluable. I have several books on New Jersey and N.Y.C and thgey are perfect for a library for quick reference and information by people who have either lived there or are expects on the subject they are writing about.

Excellent book.
As an Images Of America book, this one touched me deeply. Plus the paperback was cheaper than the e-book. This tome is in a way an in-depth look into the Triangle Factory Fire that took place on March 25, 1911. They are amazing before-during-after photos of the building, inside and out. As well as the public court reform that brought about changes in the industrial workplace. Even though it read like a textbook, I recommend this book for anyone researching New York history.
A wonderful book about a tragic, event with far-reaching important and influence. Another in this fine series of photo books.
