Fantastic read! Richtel compellingly interweaves the science and history of immunology into the lives of four patients, each dealing with different aspects of immune function & dysfunction: overreaction, underreaction, recognizing self as enemy, recognizing enemy as self, and much more.It's an ambitious premise, and he pulls it off magnificently. I had to read the whole thing in one sitting. What makes the book supremely compelling is the vivid story of his childhood friend Jason's cancer treatment. Jason not only granted Richtel access to all of his medical records and doctor visits, but also had the kind of revelatory long talks and walks that only best friends can have. The result is an unusually well-rounded psychological portrait of a patient, along with the intricately winding course of his treatment that reads like a detective story, except real. The tales are poignant, and I found myself crying (and laughing) multiple times.As someone who's studied immunology twice, as both biologist and medical student, I found the book a useful refresher of immune function, with some updates into the 21st century. Wow!I’m almost at a loss for words to describe AN ELEGANT DEFENSE and emphasize not only how important but also how interesting this book is. So I begin my comments with an exclamation (wow).This is a science book. But (whoa, don’t go away) it is probably unlike any science book you’ve had experience with. It is casual and easy to understand. And even though it does contain scientific words, Matt Richtel occasionally reminds the reader what they mean and how they are applicable to what he then describes.I am not a scientific or medical person. I only decided to read this because Richtel is a Pulitzer Prize winner for his A DEADLY WANDERING. And was I surprised that someone could make the science of the immune system so darned interesting. Honestly, it was as if I was reading an exciting thriller last night when I stayed up reading this book until I fell asleep sometime past midnight. Maybe that’s because he gives real-life examples of what he is talking about.Richtel divides AN ELEGANT DEFENSE into five parts, each perfectly named (as are the chapters). First he introduces us to four people, examples for “the extraordinary new science of the immune system.” Next comes the science, which Richtel still manages to keep casual, even humorous at times. And he sometimes adds to this part other real-life examples. The remainder of the book concentrates more on the people he began with.Much, maybe most, of AN ELEGANT DEFENSE is personal. Yes, I learned a lot. But I think, even with these readable explanations and examples showing how our immune systems are so important to everything about our bodies, this book absorbed me because Richtel makes it personal, especially Jason. Tons of beautiful photos fill this thick volume. The photos are very clear and appear true to life in color. The book is sectioned off by various areas of the home such as: dining, living room, kitchen, etc. There are many helpful tips and designer favorite tips. The writing is clear on the eyes and in concept. This is somewhat of a basic decorating book and I did feel some areas were rather boring such as: going over finding the perfect bench to place at the foot of the master bed. That being said what average homeowner among us couldn't use some brushing up on basic home layouts. Like most HB books it is really stunning but unlike some HB books the photos are not overly ornate at all and many focus on an eclectic style incorporating both modern, country and some Mediterranean designs. Some HB books seem to only be for the rich and famous. This is somewhat of a basic book with room/furniture layout discussed as well as color choices for walls, etc. I did still feel that many of the rooms were above the budget of the average homeowner but take what you can from this beautiful book. I personally would have very much liked to see more wall art displays...that was lacking. Also: for the bedrooms...more full suite photos would have been appreciated.

Absolutely gorgeous book of home decorating ideas. Thoroughly discussed in detail, you can't help but feel welcome just reading the tome. The plastic cover was unexpected, especially in a used book. I'm not sorry I bought this decorator's godsend!

The book is nicely printed, very good pictures inside and nicely indexed. I think the nice index was also what fooled me on buying this book. I thought I could learn how to design my own house from this book but instead it just show you common sense and general design concept for each room. There is no real instruction and information in this book. Still a nice book to keep on your book shelf though.

This is a wonderful book! I've referred back to it many times since I've received it. It contains info on proper furniture arrangement, tablescaping, selecting a color scheme and blending patterns, proper lighting, window treatments etc. It is broken down in sections so it's easy to use as a resource for specific design questions. It has alot of wonderful pictures of decorated rooms for inspiration as well. This book has 463 pages of info and pictures you will use time and time again. GET THIS BOOK! You will not be sorry.

I have had my eye on this book for a long time. Have checked it out at the library so many times...it is awesome. A very comprehensive design guide and it is organized in a very logical and easy to follow manner. I will refer to it regularly and am so happy to include it in my library.

Beautiful book with great information for beginners and professionals for referance on placement, color, and overall design basics. Most design books very dated and lack the design "wow factor". This book is still up-to-date and gives the building blocks of how design a strong, impactful room.

I love reading this book to my son! He loves touching the pages and looking at the beautiful artwork. Also hoard books are the best for the stages when they grab everything in sight! Was given a copy as a gift then bought two more for gifts for others!

I purchased this book mainly because of the baby wearing momma on the front. I LOVE THIS BOOK. The words are touching, the pictures are gorgeous, and it's short enough that I can read it to my toddler without her running off halfway through.

Heartwarming tale that all new moms will love to read to their baby. Made me tear up a little sharing all the love.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL BOOK!!! It’s bright and colorful but not annoying, as soon as I took it out of the packaging all my babies 5,4,2,3mo were interested!!! I read it over and over... a great book that definitely tugged on my momma heart strings as well!!! They grow too fast... 😭 (I also love that the momma was wearing her baby! Lol... All my babies have been/are worn so it definitely helps them to identify with it a bit more I think)

This is a really good book. A reviewer said it may be the best submarine book since 'Hunt for Red October', and that is probably true.The story follows the ballistic submarine Kentucky as it receives an order to launch a nuclear strike and proceeds to travel to its launch area. The submarine has been provided deceptive information by sources on both sides of the ocean, and it is pursued across the ocean by the entire US Pacific Fleet in an effort to abort the launch.Along the way we meet numerous characters, on the Kentucky as well as on other Navy vessels, and various people in the US and other governments. There is exactly the right amount of character development and background information, and there are many well developed sub-plots. The prose is professionally written and easy to read, and the story flows at a proper pace without getting bogged down in useless sidelines. There is plenty of technical information, causing you to believe the story was written by someone who actually knows what he's talking about. The story is salted with many plot twists, and the conclusion is not what you expect. Once you get going, it is hard to put this book down.A few nitpicks: I would like to think that certain intelligence agencies would not in real life choose courses of action depicted in this book (but they might). I imagine Iran would be slightly more upset than they were at the end of the book. And perhaps the author got his inspiration for this story while watching the movie 'Crimson Tide'. But in truth this is a well written story that makes you wonder what could happen (or maybe happens more than we know) in the real world. Read it - you'll be glad you did.

I am very claustrophobic. I can't think of too much worse than being submerged in a submarine for months (or even days) at a time. But I like to read good submarine books. And I think this one was great.The author is a retired Navy Commander who spent over 20 years on submarines in his career so there is definitely a sense of realism in this story.The story is centered around a conspiracy to bomb Iran. Computers are hacked, people are bribed, and one of the U.S. nuclear submarines is sent bogus messages and codes to launch their weapons upon Iran. After they receive the orders, they go silent and the U.S. government must find a way to stop this disaster from happening.There's a long list of characters in the book but I focused more on their job titles and didn't worry about remembering all their names and that worked fine for me.I've seen this favorably compared to THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER and I agree. I enjoyed both equally.I highly recommend this tale to those that like military thrillers, action thrillers, books about ocean travel in general or specifically submarines. I don't read too many of these type books but if you do, I believe the author has written four more similar books.

The USS Kentucky is a Trident ballistic missile submarine carrying nuclear warheads on patrol in the Pacific Ocean when it receives a launch order in retaliation to a nuclear attack on Washington D.C. When the administration becomes aware of the strike order terminations orders are sent numerous times but there is no response from the submarine. Who sent the launch order? Will the USS Kentucky carry out its mission? If so, will it be successful? These are the questions to be answered in this superb military/thriller and while they require a certain degree of suspension of disbelief you should to so ( this is fiction after all) and one suspenseful story.The book was written by Rick Campbell, a retired Navy Commander, and is full of terrific actions scenes as well as personal stories about some of the main characters. involved in the story. The author does not get the reader bogged down in to much technical jargon and use of acronyms as so many books of this genre do The action is easy to follow and there is alot the reader will learn about submarines and the decisons that must be made in combat situations. I really enjoyed this novel and look forward to the sequel entitled Empire Rising.
