Review

"The author brings Apess nearly fully to life, which no one else, among many scholars, has. I know of no better reader of Apess's own writing. Again and again, by close and insightful attention, the author illuminates Apess's language, often employing it as a basis for persuasive surmises about his whereabouts, about whom he is with, and the possible larger meanings of his often compressed or flat statements."―Barry O'Connell, editor of On Our Own Ground: The Complete Writings of William Apess, a Pequot

"Hello Americans, I'm Paul Harvey."He was the voice of an era. Batura follows the remarkable life of one of the founding fathers of the news media. Paul Harvey started his career during the Great Depression and narrated America's story day by day, through wars and peace, the threat of communism and the crumbling of old colonial powers, consumer booms and eventual busts. Batura's Good Day! is a colorful biography of the radio pioneer-turned-legend whose guiding light saw the country through dark times. Whether he was covering racial tensions, terrorist attacks, or which vitamins to take, Paul Harvey articulated the American experience for average people making their way in a world too large for quick comprehension. For the millions of Paul Harvey fans, this book is a loving sweet valentine to the most amazing radio personality the world even knew - pre "Rush". The book lovingly and softly told the story of a kid from Oklahoma who became a HUGE and wildly successful radio star, not because of his ability to shock, but just the opposite. Because he found the good in most situations and people. If you're looking for a hit piece - this ain't it! But if you want to warmly trace the glow of the life of Paul Harvey - from the first "Hello Americans... to his very last "Good Day"... get the book and read it. It is light reading told from a fond perspective and it will make you miss him, and his daily broadcasts "Paul Harvey News" and "The Rest of the Story". That's all I have, and as he would say... "Good Day..."

This man saw the best side of everything. And he knew how to tell a good story. Really enjoyed listening to him. Of course, today liberals would throw labels like "square" or "old fashioned" at him. But that just shows how truly dumb they are with their hateful attacks on decent people.

I've always been a fan of Paul Harvey, so this was a nice book to fill in the blanks about his life. To get a good feel for what Paul Harvey was about, do check out the "Rest of the Story" books and other Harvey books. There is no one like him on the radio these days.

Good book generally, lot's of info. BUT...there are problems! Each chapter is full of footnotes. Maybe 30-50 per chapter. That's OK, but what is involved in finding & reading these footnotes on the Kindle is almost impossible! It took me at least 3-5 minutes to find each one after guessing at what location # it might be at, then realizing I didn't note the chapter # or name (this is necessary to find the footnote), then going back to find the chapter & name, again guessing at the location the footnote might be at, let alone the problem of getting back to the chapter & page I originally found the footnote on!This whole procedure is very disruptive to the flow of the story as well as technologically challenging and a real nightmare in general! This is a weak point of the Kindle in general. But this book in particular relies so much on footnotes and has so many that it really ruins the smooth reading of the book. There is no information on the page you are reading (save the location #), no chapter # or chapter name is shown on any page beyond the 1st (title) page of each chapter (this is true of most Kindle books as well). Also, if you don't write down the location # of the page you are reading (or book mark it) you are lost when you want to return to it because the "go to furthest page read feature" takes you to the page the footnote was on which is near the end of the book!Footnotes should be denoted by the footnote #, then the chapter # and then the location #. Also, in guessing the location of where the footnote might be, it's very hard to do if you don't immediately remember the chapter # and name.As far as the content, there is much to much un-necessary description. For example, the physical appearance of a lobby in each of the many radio stations Mr. Harvey visited or worked at. Every description goes into gaudy detail of the Gothic looks of the place and have no bearing at all to the story nor are they ever referenced again. Many of these descriptions go on for many pages and are not at all necessary to the story or anything else.I got the feeling that after the 1st draft of the book was written some editor felt he could increase the size of the book 25% by adding lots of un-necessary description and details...and did! These detailed descriptions could have been so much more interesting if the words were spent describing in detail say Mr. Harvey's home or office or something that might give us further insight & clues to his personality rather than the history of where the marble used in some 1937 radio station came from & was mined and installed! There's no description or details at all about his Arizona home other than a few sentences that it existed. But loads of details about the physical looks of places that have nothing to do with the story & nobody could care less about.Still there is much good information, stories, antidotes and quotes in the book. Just super cumbersome to read being so heavily footnoted without any easy way to read the footnotes.

This book Good Day The Paul Harvey is recommended as a must read for anybody that loves to hear about a great American that lived life to the fullest.

Paul J. Batura's biography of Paul Harvey was an enjoyable read. He captured the essence of what made Paul Harvey so beloved by so many. If you grew up, like I did, listening to Paul Harvey News and Comments, you will love the book. If you did not have the privilege of living in that era, do yourself a favor and read this book about a great American!

It was an interesting book. I remember listening to "the rest of the story" when I was a kid. Even my own kids would pause in the morning when Paul Harvey came on, they also wanted to hear "the rest of the story". Worth the time spent reading it.

Overall a good book, but the misspellings detract from the enjoyment. Sax 5th Avenue? Clyde and Bonnie Parker? Would still recommend the book.

I've played tennis for over 35 years, had lesson after lesson, went to tennis camps and clinics and still there was something missing in my game that I could not get in touch with, until The Inner Game of Tennis came along.Simply put, Timothy Gallwey writes that we should trust of bodies to do what they already know how to do, without all the judgement, self-coaching and self-criticism that so many players, myself included do. I used to puzzle over why my a certain stroke was so effortlessly effective one day and then just plain terrible in the next. My body would feel a lack of confidence, for example, a kind of forehand or volley or serve anxiety. The problem was that I never fully truly trusted my body to do what it already knew how to do. And once I did, my game changed.I now play relaxed and confident, whether my opponent is better than me or not. And when errors occur, I notice them and let go, something I never used to do before. Many thanks to Mr. Gallwey for giving me my a new and most powerful tool for tennis and beyond!!

My game of golf sucks. When I mentioned to my wife that my problem is not my swing or clubs but in my head, she reminded me about "The Inner Game of Tennis," which I had not read in over 20 years. It is not a tennis book; it's about every endeavor in life. A buddy of mine who taught golf and racket sports at colleges for 35 years said that "The Inner Game of Golf" makes frequent references to the Tennis version. This is not a book where you take notes -- it infiltrates your mind and body. I'm savoring it slowly to let each "lesson" sink in. Highest praise!

I took up tennis 2 years ago at age 65. Because most of the people I play with have played for decades I figured the only way to catch up is be a practice nut and a sponge for information - videos books, lessons from pros etc. But I had not given much thought to what goes in inside the head. Like many my mind was polluted with self criticism, negative thought, and an inability to focus all the time.Fortunately I purchased a copy of this book and indeed it was a real eye opener in fact, it was almost like the author was speaking directly to me. The simple way he describes how the inner mind works for and against you was logical and it helped me understand what I was dealing with for the first time. The exercises are quite simple and the benefit came immediately. After spending about a half hour with the mental exercise I went out to the court and hit balls with the ball machine. Set on 2 line medium speed I usually have about 15 - 20 balls on the net side after hitting the full bin of 150. I hit the balls as usual but this time I was totally focuses and "in the now" the only thing I was aware of was the ball was getting great top spin and most of the balls where hitting in. When I finished I looked down at the net and there were only 3 balls that hadn't made it over. I was shocked "hey this stuff really does work!" I thought. I've only played in one match since then but I can see the results already. It is truly amazing what the mind can accomplish when you get in the zone and tune out all the distractions. This is a great book and has benefit for anyone who wants to improve at tennis or any other sport IMO.

This fantastic book cured me from stagefright. I suffered from stagefright that was so severe that I would instantly start sweating, shaking and panicking to the point that I could not remember, let alone play, a single note of my piano music. Then my piano teacher suggested I buy and read this book. I learned about the Ego driven Self One and how it wants to run everything and the sensitive, creative Self Two who really knows what is going on and can produce wonderful creations, achievements and performances if Self One will get of the way. My piano teacher and I embarked on a variety of techniques for me to get Self One off my back and occupied somewhere else. The method worked beautifully. I often think of Gallwey's suggestion about watching the tennis ball come at you and observing the patterns on it, the texture, etc. I would call this getting into the observer mode. Another helpful tip from this book was the idea of approaching my playing from a place of awareness, not judgment. I am a musician, not a tennis player. As soon as I just become aware of my technique in playing a piece of music, it takes the judgment off of it and I can fix the problem easier. In fact, the awareness often allows for the problem to fix itself. Much of the time, I need do nothing. I also have "The Inner Game of Music," and got a lot out of that as well, but this book was available to me in 1980 when I was dealing with my stagefright. I am forever grateful to Mr. Gallwey for sharing this wisdom with me. As a result of reading this book and doing the work within its pages, I was able to go on and have a successful career as a performing artist. [...]

If you are a tennis player you NEED TO READ THIS BOOK! It has helped my tennis game so much, and I quote it about every time I teach a private or group lesson. It is awesome for building confidence, overcoming the nerves of competition, and teaches you to learn to play the game of tennis in a positive way and not get down on yourself for the mistakes. LOVE IT.

So often books about excelling, especially at sports like tennis and golf that operate on fine margins of error, offer tropes about the importance of concentrating and focus yet never offer the drills necessary to achieve them, or a overarching concept to a specific approach. This book refreshingly didn't disappoint. Not only did it encourage a holistic and healthy approach to competition, it brought employable strategies for a player to examine and work with. I digested this book quickly multiple times, and have eagerly been employing its mentality. Before I would fret and worry, letting the stress of the game overwhelm me, but now I look forward to playing without the fear and insecurity.

This little book exceeded my expectations and made me wonder how many other books, unsung or forgotten, are living out there on library shelves. The New York Review of books has opened a door into this lost world of words. This is the second book I have recently read from the NYRB collection. If you've grown tired of hunting for good reads in recently published fiction you might be interested in their selections.A High Wind in Jamaica describes children and their thinking as they actually might be. When one is too young to understand the workings of the adult world, one actually has a strange advantage. The action takes place in the mid-19th century. Briefly and without spoilers, seven children are sent by their parents from Jamaica to England to attend school. Early on, their ship is seized by pirates, the children with it. This is when the fun begins. If you have a fixed image of pirates and one of children as well, A High Wind in Jamaica will forever change that. As a retired teacher, I have been very aware of what children are capable of, both good and bad. Richard Hughes provides a playing field where all manner of fantastic adventure can take place. This book is compared to Lord of the a Flies, but I don't see the similarity other than both books focus on the actions and perceptions of children freed from the safety and care of responsible adults. It is all a little weird and horrifying. By all means read this book.

"A High Wind in Jamaica" is always on the "best novels" lists and when I finally got around to it, I've discovered that the adulation is deserved. It's one of the best things I've read for a long time. "A High Wind..." is sometimes compared to "Lord of the Flies," but they can teach "Lord of the Flies" in high school because the symbolism is pretty clear and the little-nerdy-guys vs big-peer-pressure-bullies characters are easy to point out and discuss. And there's no sex in "Lord of the Flies." (How could there be? It's all boys?!?) The plot of "A High Wind..." is high adventure: After a hurricane destroys the house of the British colonialists exploiting the poor in Jamaica, the Bas-Thorntons send their five slightly wild children (oldest brother John, followed by Emily, Edward, Rachel, and baby Laura) - along with the Fernandez's slightly older and more reserved children (Margaret and Henry) - back to Britain. But on the way back, they're kidnapped by pirates and undergo a number of extraordinary physical and psychological adventures before they're returned to the motherland. The violence in "A High Wind..." is pervasive and clearly important to the plot. Like the violence, the sex is scattered throughout the story, but appears ambiguous. But if you think about it, the sexual allusions result in inappropriate sex; some dirty filthy, socially unacceptable sex WITH PIRATES; a little sexual confusion among the children; and even a some gender play WITH PIRATES, all of which could be tough to talk about with tenth graders. The first half of the novel has plenty of funny, dry British incidents. The diction itself is often intentionally humorous. The pirates turn out not to be what you might expect, which is both funny and appalling at times. And the conclusion is completely ambiguous, ending in a very thought-provoking scene. This is a terrific novel that shouldn't be wasted on the young who wouldn't understand all the implications.

High-seas piracy and the complex psychological lives of children are brought together, quite strikingly, in Richard Hughes’s 1929 novel "A High Wind in Jamaica." This book looks ahead to William Golding’s "Lord of the Flies" in the way it suggests that the outward innocence of children may conceal a capacity for cruel and wicked acts; but Hughes’s presentation of these ideas seems to work at a subtler and more disturbing level than does Golding’s better-known 1954 novel."A High Wind in Jamaica" begins in, unsurprisingly, Jamaica, at a time when that singularly lovely island is still an English colony. I took this book along with me on a trip to Jamaica, and I found that the descriptive passages from the early part of the book capture well the paradoxical beauty of the island: “The air was full of the usual tropic din: mosquitoes humming, cicalas trilling, bull-frogs twanging like guitars. That din goes on all night and all day almost: is more insistent, more memorable than the heat itself, even, or the number of things that bite” (p. 18). The evocation of natural beauty, closing on a note of menace: it is strongly characteristic of the manner in which Hughes conveys setting and tells his story. The “high wind” of the novel’s title is a hurricane that strikes Jamaica and destroys the home of the Bas-Thorntons, an English family who, like many other Britons of that time, have come to Jamaica to recoup fortunes lost in the mother country. Struck by how narrowly the family survived the tempest that destroyed the family home, and concerned that their proper English children seem to be taking on “wild” island ways, Mr. and Mrs. Thornton decide that it is a propitious time to send their children to live in England, along with the children of a nearby Creole family.Yet Hughes’s narrator places considerable emphasis on the idea that the Thorntons – and, by implication, most parents – know almost nothing about the actual emotional lives of their children, in passages like this one:“It would have surprised Mrs. Thornton very much to have been told that hitherto she had meant practically nothing to her children….[I]t would undoubtedly have surprised the children also to be told how little their parents meant to them. Children seldom have any power of quantitative self-analysis: whatever the facts, they believe as an article of faith that they love Father and Mother first and equally. Actually, the Thornton children had loved Tabby [the family cat] first and foremost in all the world, some of each other second, and hardly noticed their mother’s existence more than once a week. Their father they loved a little more: partly owing to the ceremony of riding home on his stirrups.” (pp. 44-45)But the Clorinda, the ship in which the Thorntons have booked passage “home” to England for their children, is waylaid by pirates; and once the children have been taken onto the pirate ship, Hughes gets on to his real subject: the question of what children – especially the two oldest Thornton children, John and Emily – are capable of, once the restraints of ordinary civilization have been stripped away. The children-and-pirates scenario may seem like something reminiscent of J.M. Barrie’s "Peter Pan" (1904); but if anything, "A High Wind in Jamaica" works as a sort of anti-"Peter Pan." For one thing, the pirates, as led by a Danish captain named Jonsen and his Viennese first mate Otto, are not figures of operatic menace, like Captain Hook from Peter Pan or Long John Silver from Robert Louis Stevenson’s "Treasure Island" (1883); rather, they emerge as feckless and rather pathetic figures. Taking advantage of the indulgent attitudes of Spanish colonial authorities in the port of Santa Lucia, Cuba, they are operating a good 150 years after the supposed “golden age” of piracy: “Piracy had long ceased to pay, and should have been scrapped years ago; but a vocational tradition will last on a long time after it has ceased to be economic, in a decadent form. Now, Santa Lucia – and piracy – continued to exist as they always had: but for no other reason” (p. 96). And as their nautical misadventures unfold, Jonsen and Otto and the rest of the pirates show a remarkable capacity for poor and ill-informed decision-making. The more fateful, and more existentially troubling, words and actions and decisions come from the children."A High Wind in Jamaica" offers a couple of real surprises. When, for example, one major character leaves the novel, the circumstances of said event are described so routinely – in a single, declarative, 24-word sentence, about one-third of the way through the book – that the reader is likely to flip through the next couple of pages in search of a passage saying “It was only a dream” or “It was not as serious as had been expected”; but no such passage is to be found. Comparably surprising is an action that Emily carries out after Captain Jonsen’s pirate ship has captured a Dutch merchantman.Hughes is one of those early-20th-century British modernists whose literary consciousness seems to have been molded in large part by the devastation of the First World War. His narrator sets forth the events of "A High Wind in Jamaica" with a knowing, rueful outlook on human flaws and failings, occasionally moving from the novel’s characteristic third-person omniscient point of view to passages of first-person narration in which the narrator stresses what he does not know – as when the narrator says of Mrs. Thornton that “She was a dumpy little woman – Cornish, I believe” (p. 44).This work reminded me of the novels of Robert Graves and Malcolm Lowry, fellow Britons who lived and wrote during the same period; and if you like books like Graves’s World War I memoir "Good-Bye to All That" (1929) or Lowry’s novel "Under the Volcano" (1947), then "A High Wind in Jamaica" will probably appeal to you as well.
