I recall an English teacher who once told her students that they had to read at least fifty pages in any book before deciding whether it was worth reading. Well, it took fifty pages for me to get past the boredom of the first two chapters where I read one promise after another of what was coming in some future chapter. However, to give credit where credit is due, by page 60 I began to find some meaningful content in this book and from that point on I found it useful. The book is titled "XML for Dummies" and "A Reference for the Rest of Us" and I think that fairly well describes it. If your looking for a lot of in depth XML exposure, this book isn't for you. If you already know something about mark up language (e.g. HTML) and you want to learn something about how XML and HTML can be married and from that foundation move on to a better understanding of XML then this book will probably be just fine.It's a bargain, in terms of price, and IMO it's certainly worth the price; even if you only use it as a reference source.

XML For Dummies is a good beginning reference for an ideal beginner for XML (eXtensible Markup Language). A starter will definitely appreciate this widely heralded successor to HTML and it will provide a lot of information about this powerful and flexible language that is used to format complex data for the Web. The CD ROM is definitely a great bonus.

I love this book. I know very little about XML, but want to learn the basics about the language. The Dummies book presents the material quite simply, which helps me understand the basics about XML. I am about a third of the way through and have already learned so much about it.I was impressed with the speed of delivery. I received the book within a few days after I ordered it.

Marko and Prince Robot IV join forces (sort of) to rescue their children.This volume isn't quite as good as the previous volumes, but it's still very good. This is the kind of series you need to start from the beginning.

I love this series. I discovered it wen reading a list of the top ten books in the US that are consistently petitioned to be removed from library shelves for whatever reason (usually this reason is religious).Definitely if you are reading these reviews because you are considering buying this graphic novel, you SHOULD BUY THIS GRAPHIC NOVEL. Start from the beginning. The art is phenomenal, top of the line - just plain breathtaking at times. The story is solid, relate-able on too many levels, and very digestible for even those who aren't generally into comics/graphic novels. Some of the brutality and sex portrayed in the story are shocking to see laid out there, even if you are expecting it, so try to prepare yourself with an open mind. This story is graphic, and doesn't shy away from the icky stuff.This particular installment in the series was hard to rate for me. A quick read, as usual - I finished it in a matter of an hour or less. It was good because I was so ravenous for the next part of the story, the continuation of all the great characters, but it is bad because there is hardly a positive moment anywhere to be found in this set of chapters. While the story is consistently well-written, the stoyLINE seems to be just getting worse and worse for the characters. And if you're overly attached to any one in particular, it is best to adopt a Walking Dead/Game of Thrones attitude toward that character, in order to fend off future sorrow and heartbreak. Very few people have plot armor, and no one seems to have any sort of good luck whatsoever.Prepare yourself.I'll be here waiting for volume 6 if you need me.

What attracted me first was the stark but expressive artwork. The beleaguered couple, having and raising their child on the run - handled at all well, there's plenty to pull a reader into their plight and plenty of room for the story to grow. This has been handled very well.Now, in this fifth collection of monthly comics, that early promise is still being kept.If anything, the tension just keeps getting stronger, disaster even closer. The authors have a knack for pacing. And, in an ongoing epic like this, that means managing the cast of characters. We've lost a few along the way, but gained a few also. Only a few, not so many that you'll lose track of who's who, and with enough mixed loyalties to keep the reader guessing.Two more things keep a long-lived series alive. First, the open invitation to new readers. Jumping into the middle of a story can be tough for a first-timer, but this makes it easy to dive in without tedious (or at least obvious) recaps every few issues. Second, there's sequel slump - specifically, the lack of sequel slump. It's easy and distressingly common for a series to fall into a rut, or to lose the vitality of script and art that pulled me in initially. As yet, that remains in the future for the Saga saga - and I hope it's the very far future.-- wiredweird

Saga continues to thrill as a graphic space opera with incredibly fleshed-out characters. I wish some of the print only science fiction I've read was as capable of showing me the impact of living in a technology-driven, war-torn universe on sentient beings. Dark humor abounds along with some tender familial moments, but this is balanced with intense story-driven action. Like most great science fiction writers, Vaughan jam packs his stories with multiple themes and futuristic existential crises in a way that allows enough room for readers to imagine what all of this implies about life in the future and how our current actions might be leading us to such a fate. Best of all, my wife, 18-year-old son, and I all have another common point of interest to enjoy and discuss together. My only regret is now that I'm caught up in the series I have to wait for future installments, but the anticipation of this volume made for sweet suffering.

Once again Hazel's narrations are beautifully written and inspiring. We get more glimpses into more of Alana and Marko's past which helps us dive even deeper into our beloved characters. Up until this point I feel like Alana's been a bit more of the bad ass, but in this one Marko sure steps up to the plate! I loved seeing him with a beard!! It seems as if they're all getting a little more content with life and the dealings of these real life issues they've been facing. I love the more down to earth feeling they get to settle into instead of always running on a high of getting away. Again, this series has stolen my heart and continuously gets better.

Saga is one of the best stories I've read in comics. I dove into it buying the first couple of volumes at a comic convention and it immediately grabbed my attention. The only thing is I wish I had started reading it when it was first released, or after the series was completed because having to wait for each volume in TPB is killing me!The book is progressive, positive, and hard-hitting. It hits on many topics that affect us as a society today but because it's written in as Science Fiction it can reflect on them without the appearance of pandering. I would recommend this to just about anyone, and should definitely be on the radar for younger generations.

4.5 stars. I really like Brian Vaughn's work (Y, Ex, Runaways, Pride) and his writing on this series has been wonderful. However, the star of this book is Fiona Staples. Her covers and interior art are, to borrow a Bostonian phrase, wicked-good.The Star Wars-esque Montague-Capulet w/baby story continues here as Vaughn weaves a bunch of characters through multiple storylines. Major characters die, the Will returns and the volume ends with some immediate issues resolved but a number of storylines opening up further (another reviewer mentioned how the sudden killing off of characters if very George R.R. Martin, and I agree...I also think Vaughan likes to continue to expand the universe like Mr. Martin as well).

I had hoped for a more complete picture than what the author delivered. He seemed to just regurgitate things that happened that year without any analysis on how or why they came about. Rowing is a sport based on discipline and mental strength and it would have been nice to understand more of how the culture of Harvard rowing was created by this great Coach.

A touching quasi-biography of one of the greatest coaches and leaders of any sport in history. Bill Belichik is the Harry Parker of football. Parker is a g-d like figure in the sport of crew and the author captures his subtlety, competitive spirit and effective leadership beautifully. Many lessons are contained in this book and in Parker's coaching and teaching beyond crew.

Great book about one of Americas most famous and successful rowing coaches in the last 50 years. Loved by all his athletes who were fortunate to have Harry as their Coach either at Harvard or on the National Team and Olympic team.

An insightful, fascinating and humanizing portrait of iconic rower and coach Harry Parker. For rowers and non-rowers, coaches and athletes, sports and non-sports fans alike; this book offers an engaging and entertaining narrative for everyone. I came into Odd & True expecting a fantasy story, but what I got was mostly historical fiction instead. Don’t get me wrong — I think it’s a fairly good book, but I probably wasn’t the right reader for it.When Trudchen was little, her older sister Odette told her stories about how their family was magical. Their mother was a monster slayer, their uncle was a magician, and the sisters are destined to follow in their mother’s footsteps. But when Odd reappears after two years, she still seems to believe these stories, and Tru worries that she hasn’t grown out of their childhood dreams. Odd tells Tru that as Tru’s now fifteen, she’ll start attracting the attention of monsters, and that Tru needs to come with Odd for her own safety. Although she worries her disability (a shriveled leg from childhood polio) will make travel difficult, Tru decides that Odd needs her. As the two girls cross America, Tru begins to believe Odd’s claims of monsters and magic, and Odd’s mysterious two-year absence is slowly unveiled.The book switches back and forth between two narrative strands. One is Tru’s perspective on the current day. The other is a series of flashbacks from Odd’s perspective, starting all the way back with Tru’s birth. Odd’s stories show the reality of the sisters’ lives, and its not a pretty one. It becomes clear that Odd felt the need to embellish their story to make it bearable. But does she believe the stories she tells? And is Tru growing past her skepticism?As I mentioned earlier, if you’re looking for a straight up fantasy story about girls who slay monsters, that isn’t really Odd & True. This is one of those stories where it keeps you guessing: are there actually monsters? Or… is the true monster the patriarchy?Odd & True is a feminist story, addressing the sexist inequities of the early 20th century (some of which still persist today…). A lot of this comes in through Odd’s flashbacks, which often highlight the particular vulnerabilities of low and working class women. However, feminist themes can be found in Tru’s sections as well, since people tend to immediately assume that the two girls can’t possibly be monster hunters. In Tru’s case, they also make assumptions about what she’s capable of because she’s disabled. One of the things I appreciated about Odd & True was Tru finding her own strength and confidence, and how she was able to share some of that confidence with other disabled girls.While Odd & True wasn’t what I expected, I did enjoy the ride.

I adored this book. What a lovely novel. I went in primed for a more conventional story, and was treated to a tale of depth, complexity, and courage. And yes, monsters.

Wow, Cat winters won my heart over again with her magnificent writing and vivid imagination. This was a great story for everyone but especially women!! Heartbreaking and empowering. Magical and spooky.

Not what I was expected....but even better...couldn't put it down

I have been a huge fan of Cat for years now, ever since before her first book came out. She always writes such amazing and stunning books, full of awesome characters. Odd & True was no exception. This book was truly incredible. Like I knew it would be. But yes, I am beyond happy that I loved this book so much.It ended up breaking my heart, though. Because this story was so good. And the most heartbreaking at times. I'm not sure how I'll find the words to describe how much I enjoyed it all. But will try my best. The writing was so good. And I loved the characters as well. I'm giving this stunning book five stars. As I loved it so.This book tells the story of two sisters. Odette and Trudchen. Od and Tru. They are both such stunning characters to read about. Sigh. It's also told from both point of views, Tru is present time, and Od in past time. I cannot begin to say how much I enjoyed that. Because the past was just as exciting as the present. This book takes place over a hundred years ago, which I love reading about, but oh, some of the things these girls were ignorant about made my heart hurt like crazy. Some parts of the book made me angry, some parts made me sad. But for the most part I was so happy with how much I enjoyed this story. Because it's truly an amazing book with a stunning story and awesome characters. This book also has monsters in it. Real ones and human ones.Not going to mention the plot of this book too much, just saying a little bit. It's about two awesome sisters going on a sort of adventure to hunt monsters that they have known about their whole lives. They have always known how to protect themselves from every horrible monster out in the world. And figuring out if these monsters were real or not was all kinds of exciting. And just reading about their adventure was all kinds of fun. And sad too. I only wish that this book wasn't a standalone. I badly need more of them both.I think my favorite parts of the book was reading about Od's past. Simply because it was so heartbreaking and I was dying to know what would happen next. So many surprises. So much heartbreak. Was simply stunning and so perfect. A lot of her past was when she was almost four, and when she was six years old. And oh, I cannot even tell you how much it broke my heart to read about it all. I wish this precious girl had had a better childhood. Aw. So sad. But written so well that I couldn't help but love it. My poor heart.Another thing I loved very very much was the sister relationship between Od and Tru. It was stunning to read about. I loved how much they loved each other and cared for each other. Though all of that mostly happened in the past, as in the present, I felt like Od kept way too many secrets from Tru. Hmph. Which wasn't very nice of her and made me a bit upset with her. But I also didn't really blame her, because all of those secrets were horrible and oh so heartbreaking and evil. But still felt that Od deserved to know it all.I simply adored these two girls so much. What I loved most about Tru was that she had a broken leg, yet she was still so fierce and loving and trying her best to live her life the way she wanted to. I wanted all the best for her. Sniffs. And wishing there had been focus on her upcoming romance. How rude. But despite no romance, I still loved her to pieces and enjoyed reading about her so much. She was so brave and so full of love. I couldn't help but adore her. But yeah, I do sort of wish the romance had been in focus too.And oh, Od. I cannot write too much about this girl. I simply can't. I'm not sure if I loved her or Tru more. But I do know that I loved them both like crazy. And getting to know Od was the best thing. But also the worst. Because getting her chapters broke my heart each time. More awful things got revealed, and it was so sad. Yet some good parts too, of course. I hated Cy, though. Like crazy. Awful boy. Hmph. Could not decide if I loved or hated Uncle Magnus. Think I did both. But oh, I loved Od an awful lot. So much.There is so much happening in this book. About both sisters, together or not. Though they are together all the time in the present, they weren't always in the past. And oh, reading about their family life killed me a little. So sad, yet so interesting and exciting. I loved reading about all of it. So so many exciting moments. I'm having trouble thinking of anything to write, simply because I enjoyed this book so much. Sigh. And so I won't write much more, just that you really need to read this book. It is so good. But also very evil.
