The hardcover is different from the paper back--some typographical errors fixed. But for big science buffs looking for sound facts, there seems to be quite a few chemistry errors and invalid scientific concepts contained that haven't yet been corrected.For the random perfume and scent buff, this could be a curious tease into the science. However, for trained perfumery professionals looking for sound science and information, this is NOT the book for you--as I personally discovered. Turin claims that ‘‘readingall that matters in structure-odour relations takes a few months’’ is a gross underestimate and could explain the confusion caused by some of the chemistry errors. Its also important to remember that the author is a fan of fragrance but admits early that he has never had any chemistry training when talking about the "science of smelling."I admire his passion and enjoyed hearing his vibrational theory (as that is more his expertise) but just a warning out to those looking for validated information based on training or experience

Incredibly accessible and interesting writing from someone who has an advanced chemistry background. I never took chemistry and even I have very little trouble following along, as the author is terribly adept at shaping his concepts in a way that a person of average to above-average intelligence can follow. If you're interested in cooking, perfumes, or any other field that is heavily scent-oriented, this is a great book. He does write in sections that follow, one after another, rather than breaking the book into chapters, which can be a little be tedious on a reader psychologically, but his writing is cohesive and lively and he covers the topic well, with an exhaustive amount of citation one can refer to if interested in further perusing the subjects of chemistry and smell.

This is more opinionated and provides a large amount of personal influences that can over run the chemistry included in the book. Sometimes uses personal disapproval to cast options on quality than relying on scientific findings to provide logical conclusions.At times, the writing is extremely basic definitions of common words that could have been used without adding fluff to the writing to take up space on the page.

Luca Turin has produced a wonderful volume on the world of perfume and the chemistry behind it.The pages are packed with personal stories and wonderfully refreshing insights from Luca Turin's decades in the perfume business.The material is very approachable, and I learned a lot reading the book.One caveat, while this did not remove any stars for me, some people might be upset by his premise that we smell fragrances based on a complex vibrational analysis using quantum effects in the olfactory sensors.I'm not convinced, but that did not spoil the book for me.My favorite part of the book was the description of the various base scent categories and the types of molecules that made up the family of scents.Brilliant!

I will leave it up to Mr Turin and his fellow researchers in this field to determine whether his theory is correct or not. Certainly I applaud him for putting it out there - to misquote Fran Liebowitz "no one has ever said, everything is fine, let's go invent fire". If Columbus, and every other sailor after him stayed with current knowledge, where would the global village be today? My own wishful thinking is that this marvellous bio-chemical-mechanical machine we call a body, does indeed operate in the quantum realm in some form or fashion. Mainly though my review is on all the marvellous content other than quantum mechanical noses, that this book contains. I envy Mr Turin's access and profession which allows him to research at will. His book was a delightful cornucopia of obscure (to the layman) data, spanning physics, chemistry, history, all put togther in a well written, entertaining, engrossing format. It was a pleasure to jump all over the map of science with him, it was a pleasure to see the coherence and methodology of what may at first appear to be a random interest in all matters scientific, it was a pleasure to witness the avid curiosity of his mind, and the quality of his writing on the whole - each turn of phrase, choice of words, made for an exceptional read. This book, with its numerous bits of data on all sorts of wonderful and interesting things, has led me to many enjoyable reads, retracing as best I can the footsteps of the author's reading and research.

A little too heavy on the science part but in GREAT shape as expected and promised. Would have been a better book if it had been in simpler terms for the nonscientific person. (I flipped through the book when I got it and as soon as I saw the pictures of all the molecules(?), I closed the book and decided to pick it up later...but WILL read it when I'm in the mood for something a little "heavier")

Clever little book. . . . Michael Pollan has written a book of rules about eating, with brief text elaborating the statements. On first glance, it looks like a slight volume with little substance to it. However, it turns out to be a pretty interesting book.In his introductory comments, the author notes a few undeniable truths--Western diets (e.g., processed foods and meats, lots of fat and sugar, etc.) lead to lots of health problems; traditional diets tend to be healthier than the so-called Western diet; when one leaves the Western diet, one tends to get healthier. Following are a number of rules (64 in all). The author's hope? (Page xix): "My hope is that a handful of these rules will prove sufficiently sticky, or memorable, that they will become second nature to you. . . ."Examples?"Avoid food products containing ingredients that a third-grader cannot pronounce" (Page 17). "If it came from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant, don't" (Page 41). "Treat meat as a flavoring or special occasion food" (Page 53). "Eat some foods that have been predigested by bacteria or fungi" (Page 73). Examples? Yogurt, sauerkraut, soy sauce. . . . "Pay more, eat less" (Page 99). Cheap food in large quantities (supersize me??) is normally not so good for one. "Buy smaller plates and glasses" (Page 115).In a sense, if one can keep a number of these apothegms in mind and follow those that seem most sensible, one might end up better off! So, a book that looks like a one trick pony ends up being much more satisfying than one might expect.

I have been a fan of Michael Pollan's ever since I read Botany of Desire. At the time, I thought he'd never top that book but as his curiosity and passion about food, our food delivery systems, and the fundamental importance of what we eat has increased, he has just gotten better and better.If you are already a Michael Pollan fan, you appreciate his meticulous attention to detail in his research and his lucid prose. I swear, this guy could take the most complicated subject on the planet and make it accessible to his readers. In Cooked, I think he has reached a new peak in his powers of synthesis and observation.Cooked is divided into four parts, analogous to the four elements described by the ancient Greeks: Fire, Water, Air and Earth. Of these, it was the section on Earth (fermentation) that really made me sit up and take notice. He brings up so many important points about how our Western diet fails us every day, making our lifespans shorter and our health more precarious.In its way, Cooked is as important a book about health and nutrition as Diet for a Small Planet was when it first appeared in the 1970s. This book will make you think, give you tools to improve your health, and explain how cooking a meal from scratch in your own kitchen becomes an act of rebellion.So worth your time and the purchase price.

My son has recently become infatuated with the Titanic. Anything that makes him want to learn is a win in my book because it means he'll want to read about it. And until recently, reading was his kryptonite.He requested a few different books about the ship, and I happened to find this one along the way. And I'm so glad I did. It had information in it that he hadn't yet learned.It's a good sized book, maybe a bit heavy for a 10 year old to be carrying to school, but chock full of information and a high quality printing.

Great book! I found myself reading it while I was supposed to be wrapping it for my 7 year old grandson's birthday present! His older brother (11) likes it too!

My 9 year old is obsessed with anything and everything pertaining to the Titanic and was spending a lot of time on youtube learning about it. She loves learning facts about what happened, how and why so i thought this would be great for her. When she got it she was screaming and crying because she was so excited. She read the whole book in four days and would come to be with wowing facts that she was so thrilled to learn. I often still catch her reading it and i still see her little eyes light up with amazement while doing so. I am so glad i bought this for her. If you are interested in learning about the everything pertaining to The Titanic you should not pass up on this book.

The best, best Titanic book we've gotten. My son is almost 8 and he loves fact books, this has had him well entertained. Very informative and tons of photography I had never seen. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to know more about the Titanic!

Got this for my six year old son. Some of the facts are a little over his head, pun intended. But I figure that this is a book he will go back to every so often and glean more and more info from.

this is a good reference for kids and adults alike. being a titanic history fan, i found that there is a lot of information , technical and otherwise, that anyone interested in the titanic, would find interesting. it has illustrations for those who delight in pictures and it's a fun reference.

It doesn't fill the reader with confidence when the very first answer given is wrong. The question was "Why are there 882 1/2 answers in this book?" The answer? "Because the Titanic was 882 1/2 feet long." Except it wasn't. The Titanic was 882 feet 9 inches long. I haven't checked recently, but I am fairly confident that 1/2 of a foot is 6 inches, not 9. Why couldn't they have called the book "882.75 Amazing Answers to Your Questions About the Titanic?" and maintained their credibility past page 1?I realize some people may find this a nitpick, but facts are facts. And if that answer is wrong, how can you have any faith in the rest?

This has been one of the better books to read about the day to day details of the Titanic. It breaks the information down into main categories like Meals, activities, Iceberg Impact, and etc. It also gives details on how each class of passenger experienced the voyage. The images and graphics throughout the book are awesome. My son loves to leaf through and look at the ship cutaways. The book inspires him to ask more questions, so this is a very intriguing book.

I've got a much more detailed book as well, but this is an easy read and includes lots of hyper links to nearly everything cited. Well, the hyper links work in the Kindle version on my PC anyway. I'm enjoying it.

I enjoyed this book very much. I always turn to the last page of VF to read the Proust interview before I read the magazine. This is a collection of same. Insightful in some cases, frivolous in others..all are cool!

My friend and I loved reading these at school. So I knew this would be the perfect gift for her. And she LOVED it. Great bathroom or coffeetable read. Great artwork and very diverse group of people interviewed.

Wonderful coffee table book. The celebrities answer the questions with humor and at times, amazing insight and honesty.

Nice book, attractive and high quality.Enjoy the monthly questions asked in Vanity Fair so this book was a gift to myself.I doubt most people have asked themselves, or answered, the questions Proust made famous as parlor games. Some of the celebrity answers are insightful, some irreverent, some surprising.

Interesting hypothesis about Australian Aboriginal agricultural society.Pascoe makes the claim that Australian Aboriginal society, in part, was an agricultural one rather than being a wholly hunter-gatherer one. The claims seem to be strongest in the Murray-Darling basin.The difficulty in sustaining this hypothesis is the degradation of oral history due to genocide, and the destruction of Aboriginal artefacts to forestall Native Title claims. History is being erased before our eyes.Also, the prevalent accepted wisdom that Aborigines were hunter-gathers makes it difficult for this hypothesis to be investigated properly.

Sensational ideas presented non-sensationally, this book is a must read for everyone who has not yet read it.I'm a white Australian woman aged 70+, born and raised in Tasmania, the most Anglo-minded of the states, whose history of harsh treatment of convict and Aboriginal people is as dark as the worst excesses of cruelty on 'the mainland' as we call it. My urban grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles were well educated, many in professional occupations. In my day, as Bruce Pascoe reminded me, our history courses were anglo- and euro-centric. The senior history teacher was so very boring that I opted out of history asap, which I now regret, but even if I had stuck with it, I now know that I would have learned very little about our indigenous people because, basically that teacher and the rest of my teachers even through tertiary level, knew very little of the ancient civilisation that prevailed before europeans come to the island continent now known as Australia. I knew plenty about the Ancient Egytians, Etruscans, Mesapotamians, Greeks, Romans and a bit about medieval Europe, European colonisation of Africa, Asia and the Pacific, but almost nothing about the Australian Aborigines - they were so little mentioned it was as if there was nothing much to tell, anyway. (Incidentally my education rarely mentioned the Americas, either, except as an object of european exploration and colonisation) Though still below voting age I remember the heated discussion about the May 1967 referendum which passed to at last count Aboriginal people in the national census. Until I went to live in an Outback mining centre as a young bride, I had never seen, let alone met, anyone Aboriginal. For a long time now (not by choice but hubby's work) I've been living outside Australia, and so though I've learned a bit about these people along the way, I've missed much of the daily talk on radio and tv that might have taught me more sooner, and introduced me to the things in this book far sooner. Like many readers, I found this book fascinating, exciting and some how hopeful for a better future as more non-Aboriginal Aussies come to understand not only enormity of what happened to the Aboriginal civilisation, (which we can't unwind back to pre-1788) I hope the facts and ideas in this book lead to wider understanding of more appropriate land management across our damaged continent, and respect for our Aborigines' history and achievements.

Looked at from even as close as our nearest major neighbour, the third rate Anglo-multi-culture that is the legacy of the ongoing occupation is of no global significance, while even those tiny hints of the riches of our indigenous culture which make it into the wider world and much more highly valued. We occupiers have more to learn form indigenous Australians than they have from us. Our highest aspiration should be to find a way forward together which ends and redresses our misdeeds.

I found this book to be very helpful. It’s a good book for beginners. I like that it’s concise and doesn’t have a lot of filler that’s confusing or repetitive. Everything makes sense and he gives numerous links to more resources. I’m convinced that there is money to be made trading stocks. I’ve been more of a “buy and hold” investor but am ready to be more proactive. Recommended.

This book is a great beginner bull market strategy that I have used for years. Where Matt goes beyond other books is he describes his step-by-step night before steps on finding his stocks. He also goes into risk management, which most books only talk about the top 3 of a trade: buy, sell, and stop loss. Great book for a beginner looking to get their feet wet in the market!

I received an advance copy of this book and enjoyed reading it. It would be especially good for new traders as it offers some clear advice and easy to follow strategies. I have personally applied these strategies into my trading and found them very useful. I really appreciate author writing in a way that is easy to understand and even more important simple to implement.
