I came into Odd & True expecting a fantasy story, but what I got was mostly historical fiction instead. Don’t get me wrong — I think it’s a fairly good book, but I probably wasn’t the right reader for it.When Trudchen was little, her older sister Odette told her stories about how their family was magical. Their mother was a monster slayer, their uncle was a magician, and the sisters are destined to follow in their mother’s footsteps. But when Odd reappears after two years, she still seems to believe these stories, and Tru worries that she hasn’t grown out of their childhood dreams. Odd tells Tru that as Tru’s now fifteen, she’ll start attracting the attention of monsters, and that Tru needs to come with Odd for her own safety. Although she worries her disability (a shriveled leg from childhood polio) will make travel difficult, Tru decides that Odd needs her. As the two girls cross America, Tru begins to believe Odd’s claims of monsters and magic, and Odd’s mysterious two-year absence is slowly unveiled. The book switches back and forth between two narrative strands. One is Tru’s perspective on the current day. The other is a series of flashbacks from Odd’s perspective, starting all the way back with Tru’s birth. Odd’s stories show the reality of the sisters’ lives, and its not a pretty one. It becomes clear that Odd felt the need to embellish their story to make it bearable. But does she believe the stories she tells? And is Tru growing past her skepticism? As I mentioned earlier, if you’re looking for a straight up fantasy story about girls who slay monsters, that isn’t really Odd & True. This is one of those stories where it keeps you guessing: are there actually monsters? Or… is the true monster the patriarchy?Odd & True is a feminist story, addressing the sexist inequities of the early 20th century (some of which still persist today…). A lot of this comes in through Odd’s flashbacks, which often highlight the particular vulnerabilities of low and working class women. However, feminist themes can be found in Tru’s sections as well, since people tend to immediately assume that the two girls can’t possibly be monster hunters. In Tru’s case, they also make assumptions about what she’s capable of because she’s disabled. One of the things I appreciated about Odd & True was Tru finding her own strength and confidence, and how she was able to share some of that confidence with other disabled girls. While Odd & True wasn’t what I expected, I did enjoy the ride.

I adored this book. What a lovely novel. I went in primed for a more conventional story, and was treated to a tale of depth, complexity, and courage. And yes, monsters.

Wow, Cat winters won my heart over again with her magnificent writing and vivid imagination. This was a great story for everyone but especially women!! Heartbreaking and empowering. Magical and spooky.

I love this book!

Loved this book. One of Cat Winters best!

Not what I was expected....but even better...couldn't put it down

I have been a huge fan of Cat for years now, ever since before her first book came out. She always writes such amazing and stunning books, full of awesome characters. Odd & True was no exception. This book was truly incredible. Like I knew it would be. But yes, I am beyond happy that I loved this book so much.It ended up breaking my heart, though. Because this story was so good. And the most heartbreaking at times. I'm not sure how I'll find the words to describe how much I enjoyed it all. But will try my best. The writing was so good. And I loved the characters as well. I'm giving this stunning book five stars. As I loved it so.This book tells the story of two sisters. Odette and Trudchen. Od and Tru. They are both such stunning characters to read about. Sigh. It's also told from both point of views, Tru is present time, and Od in past time. I cannot begin to say how much I enjoyed that. Because the past was just as exciting as the present. This book takes place over a hundred years ago, which I love reading about, but oh, some of the things these girls were ignorant about made my heart hurt like crazy. Some parts of the book made me angry, some parts made me sad. But for the most part I was so happy with how much I enjoyed this story. Because it's truly an amazing book with a stunning story and awesome characters. This book also has monsters in it. Real ones and human ones. Not going to mention the plot of this book too much, just saying a little bit. It's about two awesome sisters going on a sort of adventure to hunt monsters that they have known about their whole lives. They have always known how to protect themselves from every horrible monster out in the world. And figuring out if these monsters were real or not was all kinds of exciting. And just reading about their adventure was all kinds of fun. And sad too. I only wish that this book wasn't a standalone. I badly need more of them both.I think my favorite parts of the book was reading about Od's past. Simply because it was so heartbreaking and I was dying to know what would happen next. So many surprises. So much heartbreak. Was simply stunning and so perfect. A lot of her past was when she was almost four, and when she was six years old. And oh, I cannot even tell you how much it broke my heart to read about it all. I wish this precious girl had had a better childhood. Aw. So sad. But written so well that I couldn't help but love it. My poor heart.Another thing I loved very very much was the sister relationship between Od and Tru. It was stunning to read about. I loved how much they loved each other and cared for each other. Though all of that mostly happened in the past, as in the present, I felt like Od kept way too many secrets from Tru. Hmph. Which wasn't very nice of her and made me a bit upset with her. But I also didn't really blame her, because all of those secrets were horrible and oh so heartbreaking and evil. But still felt that Od deserved to know it all.I simply adored these two girls so much. What I loved most about Tru was that she had a broken leg, yet she was still so fierce and loving and trying her best to live her life the way she wanted to. I wanted all the best for her. Sniffs. And wishing there had been focus on her upcoming romance. How rude. But despite no romance, I still loved her to pieces and enjoyed reading about her so much. She was so brave and so full of love. I couldn't help but adore her. But yeah, I do sort of wish the romance had been in focus too.And oh, Od. I cannot write too much about this girl. I simply can't. I'm not sure if I loved her or Tru more. But I do know that I loved them both like crazy. And getting to know Od was the best thing. But also the worst. Because getting her chapters broke my heart each time. More awful things got revealed, and it was so sad. Yet some good parts too, of course. I hated Cy, though. Like crazy. Awful boy. Hmph. Could not decide if I loved or hated Uncle Magnus. Think I did both. But oh, I loved Od an awful lot. So much. There is so much happening in this book. About both sisters, together or not. Though they are together all the time in the present, they weren't always in the past. And oh, reading about their family life killed me a little. So sad, yet so interesting and exciting. I loved reading about all of it. So so many exciting moments. I'm having trouble thinking of anything to write, simply because I enjoyed this book so much. Sigh. And so I won't write much more, just that you really need to read this book. It is so good. But also very evil. Ahh.Thank you so much to the lovely UK publisher for sending me this ARC to read and review. So happy to have my collection of books by Cat complete too, eee. And cannot wait to get my two pre-orders of this lovely hardcover as well. It's going to be so stunning. If you haven't pre-ordered this yet, then you really must. Because Odd & True was all kinds of perfection. It was everything I wanted it to be. Odd & True was full of mystery and monsters. Heartbreaking moments and a stunning sister relationship. Loved it so.---This review was first posted on my blog, Carina's Books.

Just finishing reading it now. It is very interesting and quick read. I have learned a lot. Our priest at church are Vincentians and shared the story of the Miraculous Medal and St. Catherine on the feast days Nov. 27 and Nov. 28. I ordered to share with my sons but am glad to have read it as well.

Easy to read - perfect for elementary school kids- but I like it for adults too.

I love this book because it really shows what the saints life was like.I also think that the book is amazing how it words are so deeply detailed.I also love the story! it made me cry a little bit. but I recommend that this is the perfect book for children like me(I'm only 11)that are in any type of religious schools.thank you for reading this post and bye!!!!

Delightful and well written as always by Ms. Windeatt - and love the drawings - one for each chapter. This is not for the youngest due to written it seems for grades 4 and up.

Very interesting true story for children to read for themselves or to be read to. Highly recommended.

For my daughter, to learn about her Patron Saint.

This book tells the basic story of how the Miraculous Medal came into being. An easy read. Good for anyone who doesn't know the story.

Awesome story which brings the saint's to life.

I keep a journal. I have since I was 10. As I got older, and being artistically inclined, I began to add "fodder" to my journals. Within the last few years, I discovered the art journal, and though I don't put art on all of my pages, I am interested in adding flourishes, etc to my normal written entries. I bought their first book, Journal Junkies Workshop because I liked that they seemed to have a different perspective on the art journal. They seem a little disdainful (as another reviewer pointed out) of other popular art journalers who always use layer after layer of paint and include antique-y photos with dunce caps and wings. True, those elements seem to be favored by a lot of artists for some reason. But if THAT is what speaks to those people, then they should do it.I was firstly disappointed that the "365" and "daily doses of inspiration" didn't mean that there were actually 365 writing/journaling/art prompts. They divide the book in 12 sections, meant to be done throughout a year, but then they give you only 4 basic prompts, that, one would assume, you are supposed to ruminate over for 7 whole days. I think they mention that there are places on the internet that list journal prompts, but couldn't they have just come up with a big list anyway, to make the title more true?I liked the prompts, I will possibly work some into my journal, but their techniques that they show were all pretty much covered already in their other book.I really love the look of the cover. And one last note: Neither of these guys must have kids for them to suggest you leave your journal out and open on your desk. If I were to do that, my kids would grab the nearest crayons and scissors; goodbye journal.

This is one of my favorite go-to books for ideas for my sketchbook. The ideas are new and not overused. The pictures and directions are clear and allow for the reader to make their own decisions and designs. It is definitely not a copy the art project book. It is much deeper than that. I would recommend this book to anyone. I'm hoping to use these prompts for my AP art students next year for their sketchbooks. I feel that both high school students and artists who love working in their sketchbooks would benefit from this book.

I'm a beginning Art Journalist. I hesitated at first, because due to illness I've been home every day and I didn't think I'de have anything interesting to say or inspiration to draw from. But also I think, that I had a misconception of what an Art Journal can be. I was under the impression that I would have to be living life out and about. Traveling to different places gathering visual as well as emotional information (something fascinating and really deep) to place in my Journal. To make it interesting. Actually it's not absolutely necessary. I'm not saying it doesn't help but when your choices are limited you can improvise. Not only do they give you great instructions they also give you promps. It can be a word, a quote, or passed memories. Anything that gets your mind moving into a thought process. My first page was about my two favorite inventions. I sketched my Kindle e-reader and my iPod and added my thoughts on them. A short paragraph. Silly, maybe, but it was a start. After reading this I realized I was making it more complicated than it was. There's no need to develope angst over it. It's suppose to be fun. I also like their style. Many Journalists like to make their Journals three dimensional by that I mean they apply buttons and things that makes it very bulky. I'm not saying that's bad. I just prefer the way they add interest to there pages. They add it with paint, sketches, words or fonts, newspapers, magazines, receipts, stamps, tissue paper etc... In the form of a collage. It's interesting without being too bulky. Obviously, it's personal preference. Just do what you love and have fun. I am.

The authors really do live up to their promise of a daily source of inspiration. At first I didn't always connect their prompts in journal keeping with my personal interest in painting, but wanting to get the most out of their material I obediently proceeded to follow each prompt. It required a lot more writing than I had planned on, and a lot of personal history that I found irrelevant to my goals as an artist, not an an autobiographer. This is likely because I am somewhat older than the average reader of this sort of book, and no longer feel much of a need for self discovery or self examination. Be that as it may, I have so far enjoyed the activities, and most of all, I find that my overall creativity level is indeed inspired, and shows in my artwork. The down side is that I spend time on my journal that I should be spending on my painting.I purchased a second copy as a gift for a friend, and it seems to be inspiring her to return to her own artwork after a hiatus of some years.

Anything that had 365 in the tittle suggests everyday of the year. I expected something for everyday, even if it was just a tip of the day or suggestions on how to journal everyday. I was really hoping for a prompt for everyday but this book doesn't even come close. I really wish I had read the reviews before buying it.

Love the ideas and refreshingly new techniques that are accessible to everyone, not just the artistically talented. I’m looking forward to trying this out very soon.

I like that it discusses when you make mistakes and that your journal doesn't have to be perfect. It teaches you how to self-reflect.

I expected daily doses and got more like ramblings grouped under some headings. Not enough in examples of pages from beginning to end. It only gives some pieces from the middle. Does not feel like 365.

The Basic Myths About CriminalsIN NEARLY A HALF-CENTURY, little has changed in terms of deeply ingrained beliefs about the causes of crime. In the classic, still often performed, 1957 musical West Side Story, Stephen Sondheim parodied what then was the current thinking about juvenile delinquency in the song "Gee, Officer Krupke." Delinquents were punks because their fathers were drunks. They were misunderstood rather than no good. They were suffering from a "social disease," and society "had played [them] a terrible trick." They needed an analyst, not a judge, because it was "just [their] neurosis" acting up. In short, their criminal behavior was regarded as symptomatic of a deep-seated psychological or sociological problem. In this chapter I shall briefly discuss this proposition. In subsequent chapters I shall examine them in greater detail and show that the prevalent thinking about crime has been and still is loaded with fundamental misconceptions resulting in devastating consequences for society.A man abducts, rapes, and murders a little girl. We, the public, may be so revolted by the gruesomeness of the crime that we conclude only a sick person could be capable of such an act. But our personal gut reaction shows no insight into, or understanding of, what really went on in this individual's mind as he planned and executed the crime. True, what the perpetrator inflicted upon this child is not "normal" behavior. But what does "sick" really mean? A detailed and lengthy examination of the mind of a criminal will reveal that, no matter how bizarre or repugnant the crime, he is rational, calculating, and deliberate in his actions--not mentally ill.Criminals know right from wrong. In fact, some know the laws better than their lawyers do. But they believe that whatever they want to do at any given time is right for them. Their crimes require logic and self-control.Some crimes happen so fast and with such frequency that they appear to be compulsive. A person may steal so often that others become convinced that he is the victim of an irresistible impulse and therefore a "kleptomaniac." But a thorough mental examination would show that he is simply a habitual thief, skilled at what he does. He can case out a situation with a glance, then quickly make off with whatever he wants. A habit is not a compulsion. On any occasion, the thief can refrain from stealing if he is in imminent danger of getting caught. And if he decides to give up stealing for a while and lie low, he will succeed in doing so.The sudden and violent crime of passion has been considered a case of temporary insanity because the perpetrator acts totally out of character. But again, appearance belies reality.A man murders his wife in the heat of an argument. He has not murdered anyone before, and statistical trends would project that he will not murder again. It is true that the date, time, and place of the homicide were not planned. But an examination of this man would show that on several occasions he had shoved her and often wished her dead. In addition, he is a person who frequently has fantasies of evening the score violently whenever he believes that anyone has crossed him. He did not act totally out of character when he murdered his wife. He was not seized by an alien, uncontrollable impulse. In his thinking, there was precedent for such a crime. An individual with even worse problems, but with a different personality makeup, would have resolved them differently. For example, one man whose family I evaluated during a child custody dispute discovered that his wife was spending hours on the Internet involved with a man whom she met and had sex with, then announced her plan to spend the rest of her life with him. Although her husband was emotionally devastated and irate, he neither threatened nor attacked her. He proceeded through the legal system toward divorce and obtaining custody of his daughter. If criminals are not mentally ill, aren't they nevertheless victims of poverty, divorce, racism, and a society that denies them opportunities? Since the late nineteenth century, there has been a prevalent opinion that society is more to blame for crime than the criminal. But criminality is not limited to any particular societal group, as the 3.2 million arrests during 1999 demonstrate.Sociologists assert that the inner-city youngster responds with rage to a society that has excluded him from the mainstream and put the American dream beyond his reach. Some even contend that crime is a normal and adaptive response to growing up in the soul-searing conditions of places like Watts and the South Bronx. They observe that correctional institutions contain a disproportionately large number of inmates who are poor and from minority groups. These inmates are seen as casualties of a society that has robbed them of hope and virtually forced them into crime just so they can survive.Suburban delinquents are also regarded as victims--of intense pressures to compete, of materialism, of parents who neglect them or push them to grow up too fast, or are overly protective. These adolescents are perceived as rebelling not only against their parents but against middle-class values, seeking meaning instead through kicks and thrills. If it isn't grinding poverty that causes crime, then its opposite--overindulgence--is cited as the cause. As developing nations become increasingly industrialized and their citizens become prosperous, crimes that were rare burst into headlines. In a Bangkok Post article about two tragic shooting sprees, the writer conjectured that "Western-style teenage crime" was emerging in Thailand because Thai children were so indulged that they would "snap" when confronted by life's hardships. Whether a child is deprived or pampered tells us nothing about how he will turn out. Most children who grow up in poverty and most indulged children become independent, resourceful, and responsible. What of the observation that a disproportionate number of people incarcerated for crimes are both poor and from minority groups? Does this make a commentary on those groups? Or does it prove that the criminal justice system is racist? To whatever extent inequities exist, they need to be corrected. During the past thirty-three years I have focused on individuals, not groups. While interviewing and evaluating members of various ethnic and racial groups, I have found that in nearly every case members of the offender's own family have been law-abiding. The critical factor in becoming a criminal justice statistic is not race or ethnicity; it is the character of the individual and the choices he makes. It is unwarranted and racist to assume that because a person is poor and black (or brown, red, or yellow) he is inadequate to cope responsibly with his environment and therefore can hardly help but become a criminal.Peer pressure is seen as a critical factor in the lives of youngsters from all social classes who turn to crime. Experts point out that some subcultures reward being daring and tough, and not living by a work ethic. Kids learn about crime from one another; they are schooled in the streets and go along with the crowd in order to acquire self-esteem and a sense of belonging. The belief that crime is contagious like a disease is more than a century old.Every social institution has been blamed for contributing to crime. Schools have been singled out as forcing into crime youngsters who don't fit the academic mold. Churches have been accused of not providing leadership to wayward youth and to the community at large. Newspapers, television, and the movies have been charged with glamorizing crime. American business and advertising have been accused of contributing to distorted values and therefore to crime.Economic hard times have been associated with an increase in crime. But then so have good times. Financial setbacks are said to push despondent people over the edge. But then, when times are booming, it has been thought that the gap between the "haves" and "have nots" widens and the latter, out of resentment, turn to crime. Economic pressures are also seen as contributing to crime by forcing mothers to go to work, further weakening the family. Their children have less supervision and guidance than before, and are even more vulnerable to peer pressure.Economic adversity affects us all. We may be pushed to work longer hours or to take a second job. Women who prefer to be at home may have little choice but to go to work. Families may have to make do with less and watch goals slip further out of reach, and people on fixed incomes bear a special burden. The responsible person responds to economic pressures by sacrifice and hard work. Even for him, temptation may be stronger to step outside the law as the economic squeeze grows tighter. Ultimately, however, it comes down to how each person chooses to deal with the circumstances he faces.Sociological explanations for crime, plausible as they may seem, are simplistic. If they were correct, we'd have far more criminals than we do. Criminals come from all kinds of families and neighborhoods. Most poor people are law-abiding, and most kids from divorced parents are not delinquents. Children may bear the scars of neglect and deprivation for life, but most do not become criminals. The environment does have some effect. For instance, it can provide greater or fewer opportunities for crime to occur--greater or lesser deterrence. But people perceive and react to similar conditions of life very differently. A family may reside in a neighborhood where gangs roam the streets and where drugs are as easy to come by as cigarettes. The father may have deserted and the mother may collect welfare. Yet not all the children in that family turn to crime. In suburbia, a family may be close emotionally and well off financially, but that is not enough to keep one of the youngsters from using drugs, stealing, and destroying property. In an area where firearms and drugs are readily available, most residents choose to use neither. The criminal seizes upon opportunities that others shun. More critical than the environment itself is how the individual chooses to respond to whatever the circumstances are.We have seen other instances of when a major change in the environment suppresses crime or permits it to flourish even throughout an entire country. When totalitarian governments with their despots fall from power and are replaced by democratic regimes, the citizenry has more freedom. The responsible person has opportunity to develop his talents and pursue interests that he couldn't before. The person who is criminally inclined also has greater freedom and will pursue whatever interests him. This in part explains the surge in crime reported in countries that previously had oppressive governments.Criminals claim that they were rejected by parents, neighbors, schools, and employers, but rarely does a criminal say why he was rejected. Even as a young child, he was sneaky and defiant, and the older he grew, the more he lied to his parents, stole and destroyed their property, and threatened them. He made life at home unbearable as he turned even innocuous requests into a battleground. He conned his parents to get whatever he wanted, or else he wore them down through endless argument. It was the criminal who rejected his parents rather than vice versa. Not only did he reject his family, but he rejected the kids in the neighborhood who acted responsibly. He considered them uninteresting, their lives boring. He gravitated to more-adventurous youngsters, many of whom were older than he. Crime is not contagious like chicken pox. Even in crime-infested neighborhoods, there are youngsters who want no part of the action. Sure, there is the desire to belong to the crowd, but the question is which crowd. Criminals are not forced into crime by other people. They choose the companions they like and admire. The school does not reject the antisocial youngster until he is impossible to deal with. Many criminals have no use for school whatsoever. Some remain in school, then use their education to gain entree into circles where they find new victims. More commonly, delinquent youngsters use the classroom as an arena for criminal activity by fighting, lying, stealing, and engaging in power plays against teachers and other pupils. Basically, for them, school is boring, its requirements stupid, the subjects meaningless. Just as the criminal rejects his parents, he does the same to his teachers. It is neither incompetent teachers nor an irrelevant curriculum that drives him out. In fact, the school may offer him an individually tailored program, but no matter what he is offered, it does not suit him. Finally, he is expelled for disruptive behavior or grows so bored that he quits. The notion that people become criminals because they are shut out of the job market is an absurdity. In the first place, most unemployed people are not criminals. More to the point, perhaps, is that many criminals do not want to work. They may complain that without skills they can't find employment. (Of course, it was their choice not to remain in school to acquire those skills.) But, as many a probation officer will observe, usually jobs of some sort are available, but criminals find them too menial and beneath them. Some criminals are highly educated and successful at their work. Their very success may serve as a cover for crime. If a person has a solid work record, he is generally regarded as responsible and stable. But even legitimately acquired money, recognition, and power are not sufficient incentives for a criminal to live within the law. The point is that what a person's environment offers or lacks is not decisive in his becoming a criminal. The public often criticizes the media for making crime enticing by glorifying both specific crimes and criminals. There has long been intense concern about the high incidence of violence in television programs that reach children. In the aftermath of school shootings during the 1990s, television again came under scrutiny for its effect on children. One highly publicized study released in 2000 claimed to support the contention that television causes aggression. But millions of people who frequently watch violence on television dramas, films, documentaries, and newscasts do not enact what they see.A person already thinking about committing crimes may pick up ideas from the media, or become more confident about the feasibility of a particular crime. Fascinated and excited by the prospect of imitating and getting away with what he has watched on television or in a movie, he perpetrates what has come to be called a "copycat crime." Critical, though, is not what plays on the screen but what lies in the mind of the viewer. Television, movies, video games, magazines, or books will not turn a responsible person into a criminal. To believe otherwise is again to subscribe to the erroneous premise that external events easily shape human character.

I have had this book for years and Dr. Samenow is brilliant.

While there are personalities as the author describes, these are the habitual and career criminals who have a very extreme level of narcissism. Whether sociopathic or extremely narcissistic, they are functionally very much alike. He does tend to lump all criminal activity into this category, at least in the way he has presented his argument. I find the work shallow and incomplete. His section on terrorists is actually very inaccurate. He admits to have no personal experience with this and relies on a few works by other people in attempting to apply his theory to this area. It does not work. He misses much in the way of accurate data, even lacking in sufficient anecdotes to support his theory.I can't recommend this book.

This is a book everyone should read. I first read it back in college (ca 1985 while studying Engineering) and found it to be an eye-opener. I bought the revised edition because -- well -- it's a book that deserves reading twice. The author uses case histories to illustrate how the criminal thinks and what is important to him. This book helped me to banish from my thinking some of the pervasive myths about criminal behavior I had absorbed. I don't work in law enforcement nor in any related field so, for me, the best remembered lesson from the book is that the choices I make matter and why making good ones is so important.

This book is a great insight from the opposition of what we've been conditioned to. It will introduce theories and facts that you probably never considered. It will give you an insight of how we've come about to where we are in the studies of the criminal mind and it's conclusions. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to understand the dysfunctions of some individuals, and you might even learn something about yourself.

This book opens up on a new perspective on how criminals think. It quite surprised me at the end because for criminals, crime comes inside their minds as thoughts, as easily as for example wanting a sweet when on a diet, and the author urges criminals to control their thoughts because it is the only way they can truly change their behavior. Based on what I've come to learn and see so far, this book hits the nail with the hammer regarding the mental process and psyche of a criminal. This book is absolutely stunning.

I was recommended this book by a counselor that my wife and I are seeing to help us address issues related to our son's behavior and subsequent incarceration. This book has given me insights into the minds' of those who choose to think that they are above the law and can do as they please.I learned much about myself after reading this book, and my wife is currently reading it as I write this review. If you have a loved one who is behind bars, or one that you believe is headed there, I think that this book will give you much insight as to what makes them tick, what drives them, and what they see when they view the world. I believe this should somehow be required reading for every parent who has a child behind bars, as well as anyone who's significant other is behind bars. Stop blaming yourself.

This is a fantastic book to read as I want to explore more about the criminal minds and why they think a certain way, this is a fantastic book for criminal psychology majors.

It is simply the best book I've read on the subject. Forget about self-pity and all the excuses, what is needed to "habilitate" a criminal is a 180 degree shift in thinking errors as the author explains. Anything less than that will not make a dent in a criminal's personality. I was particularly touched by Leroy's story at the end of the book and Dr. Yochelson's death at that specific point in Leroy's life, brought tears to my eyes.Highly recommended reading!

The book describes various types of criminal behavior that have the same selfish thought processes. Focus is on criminals that get caught and choose or refuse to change. However, criminals that don't get caught due to having powerful positions or cunning are not discussed. It seems most people have criminal thoughts and the only thing thing that separates them from those that are labeled as criminals is acting on the criminal thoughts. The basic premise of the book is valid but the analysis is incomplete.

From back cover:Sawako Kuronuma is the perfect heroine.... for a horror movie. With striking similarities to a haunting movie character - jet-black hair, sinister smile and silent demeanor - she is mistakenly called Sadako, the haunting movie character.Sadako finally becomes friends with her classmates, instead of scaring them off. Even Kurumi, the cutest girl in school, wants to be her friend. But will this new friendship make Sadako realize that her feelings for Kazehaya might be more than just friendly?Review:Another series of firsts for Sawako. The first time that she is invited to 'hang out' with friends, the first time that she calls a boy (Kazehaya), etc. I find Sawako's appreciation for these events very endearing. We learn more about the central characters (Sawako, Kazehaya, Yani, Chizu, and Sanada) and watch their relationships develop. Yani and Chizu seem to have little in common with Sawako yet they show legitimate friendship for her and want her to be happy. Unfortunately, Kurumi has entered Sawako's life and has self-identified herself as Sawako's friend. Kurumi has ulterior motives for this sudden friendship that are only partially identified in this book. This series moves slowly, but Sawako always leaves me with a warm feeling. One of my favorite aspects is that the relationships develop rather jumping straight to romance.I give book 3 of kimi ni todoke a 4.5In order to come up with an overall review/rating for the series and this specific book within the series, I used the following criteria:Character development: Excellent (5). This series is about teenagers and their relationships; primarily focused on the high school environment and activities. The characters are very real and human. I would be surprised if anyone reading this could not find someone that they can relate to. The characters grow and we learn more about them in a consistent manner. In the 20+ books that I have read of this series, I have not noted any actions that seemed out of character based on the character development and story line. Characters have changed, but they have changed in ways that are logical and consistent with what the reader knows of them.Art: Is slightly better than average (3.5) I enjoy this series a great deal, but the art could be improved especially the faces.Relationship development: is Excellent (5) Although this series does move slowly, this means that the relationships develop as they would in real life. The shy girl doesn't get the guy by the end of the first book, friendships don't develop (or end) abruptly and for no reason, etc.Overall Story: Very Good (4). This is not my 'typical' genre of manga, but I did enjoy reading the books. My big complaint is that it seems to move so so slowly. It is about relationships - love, friendship, frenemies, and acquaintences. Sawaka agonizes for chapters over decisions. Since I do the same thing, I can't fault her, but at the same time, it does make the story move very slowly.Author's notes/extras: Not every author includes includes author's notes, however, Karuho Shiina has. I enjoy learning more about the person behind a book so I appreciate the extra effort that the author takes to tell us about herself. Will I re-read? Excellent (5). Yes, I will re-read this series. As a matter of fact, I DID. I read most of the books (the first time) on-line, but felt guilty that the author and publishing company were not benefiting. I then purchased the books and have found that the print version from the publisher is the better way (for me) to enjoy these books. Will I recommend? Very Good (4.5). If you enjoy this style of manga, I believe you will enjoy this series.

I'm not much of a reviewer So I'll just tell you why I bought this manga I watched the anime until the end and I just wanted more so from where the anime left off I had to see what happened next and what was in store for the future so I binge read the manga until it stopped online then I bought the last three to binge read the rest so yeah I know I was obsessed but I don't care I love it!

Cute characters, sweet wholesome story. It was fun watching all the characters grow up. And I love the author’s commentary on the sidelines. Thanks for writing a great series!

I'm crying it's so good

I absolutely adore this series! For those interested in a hilarious romantic comedy this is the series for you! You can't help but fall in love with all the characters.

I bought this for my husband who loves Kimi ni Todoke the TV series. He was so excited and even more excited when he read it and was enjoying it.

Super cute story and the books are nice to have as they match the colours in my room.

I really like how the characters are developing i really like this manga it's not fast paced which make you understand the characters more. The story is getting more interesting and you want to know how the story ends and what characters do they end up with you
