Review

Named a Best Book of the Year by The Guardian“Brilliant…[a] beautifully humane account.” —The Guardian, Best Books of the Year“Mesmerizing…a true gift to readers who may have brain injuries or disorders, and well beyond that population, to anyone interested in the brain and how its wounding shapes behavior.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune“A collection of probing and empathetic stories of difficult neurological cases…O’Sullivan is a skilled storyteller in the same league as Oliver Sacks.” —Kirkus Reviews “[O’Sullivan] succeeds both in showing the brain as the most sophisticated of all puzzles and in giving a sense of the intricate problem solving that goes into the diagnosis and treatment of brain ailments…a valuable resource.” —Publishers Weekly“A terrific follow-up [to Is It All in Your Head?]…In the space between cold diagnostic data and the personal challenges facing her patients, O’Sullivan’s sympathy, compassion and understanding come through…Brainstorm deserves a place on the same bookshelf [as The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat].” —Seattle Times “A tremendously interesting work…wonderfully humane.” —The Telegraph“A fascinating attempt to draw the lay reader into understanding more about the function and malfunction of the brain using real-life stories.” —The Times (UK) “Fascinating…these profiles poignantly capture the indiscriminate nature of epilepsy and its wide-ranging manifestations. O’Sullivan’s prose strikes a balance between empathy and science, thoughtfully communicating each person’s story…Enlightening and humbling.” —Booklist“As one would expect from a neurologist in the Oliver Sacks tradition, O’Sullivan is a sure guide to these maverick brains and strange auras.” —The Guardian“Engaging and diverse…Brainstorm isn’t just a good read. It is full of interesting science, clearly described and carefully woven in with more anecdotal passages…an engrossing book written by a doctor whose primary interest is in her patients.” —The Lancet “O’Sullivan is a calm and clear guide to the diagnostic methods (equal parts art and science) of modern neurology…one of the larger, more humane achievements of her book is to have broadened our sense of what a storm in the brain might look like, or feel like.” —Irish Times“Tender, moving, and fascinating…This is a book about neurology, and how the function of our brains affects everything. But it is much more than that. Suzanne O’Sullivan’s real detective work is found in the gaps and spaces between doctor and patient, where she gets to the heart of who we are.” —Christie Watson, author of The Language of Kindness

A fascinating look into neurological oddities associated with epilepsy. This is written in an easy-to-understand, narrative way, that is really interesting. Kind of in the vein of Oliver Sacks with different case studies. I hadn't realized that epilepsy could manifest in so many different ways. It's not always the thrashing around kind of seizures. The author is a medical specialist in this area & has been treating patients for many years, so is very knowledgeable in the area.

The stories in this book come from the authors experience with patients. The mystery and insight is because the patient ailments are in the brain, often epilepsy. Reading these stories helps me understand how central our brains are to all we do and are. And it helps appreciate how shocks to the brain can produce unanticipated consequences. This is an important book for developing a better understanding of these issues.

....and when you have an doctor who a.) actually admits the brain has its own weirdness b.) admits what her specialization doesn't know and c.) sees everything important in the PATIENT as opposed to the illness--well that's a doctor I wouldn't mind having. Cases studies are the tool used to describe both illness and patient, and while epilepsy is the Doctor's speciality, a whole host of other illnesses, philosophies, and hopes for the future are discussed along the diagnostic way. An absolute must for anyone going through the sometimes exhausting process of neurological diagnosis. It's reassuring to know that there are answers. It just sometimes takes time. For the rest of us, it's medical detective stories and neuroscience. Highly highly recommended.

As a patient who has had epilepsy all my life I appreciated Dr. O'Sullivan's emphasis that doctors depend upon good communication with patients for a proper diagnosis. Brainstorm helps reader to understand the many ways epilepsy can impact the patient. Epilepsy is more than just a "seizure disorder".

Thanks for delivering on time and books were as described.

With every case being unique and difficult we are able to relate to these patients organized by chapter.I stumbled upon the book at Strand Books in NYC but wasn't sure it was 100% epilepsy patients but after browsing chapters and the index it is and I bought it for myself and friend.Just wish the Table of Contents had a summary of what the patient Dx/case was about to see which ones were more beneficial for me and others.

My uncle has epilepsy, but I have never truly understood what happens in the brain during a seizure. This book explains it all incorporating both science and real stories. It is an easy read, very well written and does not get boring. Each patient's story is somewhat connected to the previous one, but can be read separately as well. It is amazing how little we know about brain!
