De Roche is like the friend you have that is always off adventuring and has an amazing gift for writing those adventures down. Sometimes you wish you were right there with her, other times, you like reading about what she is experiencing, but you'd rather pass on the hard parts. She is excellent at carrying you through both the good and the bad. Love her sharing of insights on travel, love, life, and loss unpretentiously.She writes with humor, sometimes dark humor, but she doesn't always stay there, sometimes you can feel the sun on your face and the grass on your back as she and her friend take roadside breaks on their pilgrimage through Italy. I love how she manages to weave her grief and her processing of recent losses into the tapestry of her story. I also recommend her first book, LOVE WITH A CHANCE OF DROWNING.
After reading (and re-reading) Torre DeRoche's first book, "Love With a Chance of Drowning," I looked forward with great anticipation to her second book, "The Worrier's Guide to the End of the World," and was not disappointed. While her first book was very action-packed, out on the deep blue sea, her new book, this time on land, explores her inner world as well as her outer one. Her signature quirky sense of humor keeps those existential questions from getting too heavy, while giving the reader plenty to contemplate. There's a great contrast between the first half, a pilgrimage in Italy, and the second, which takes place in India, and her descriptions take you to both. I highly recommend reading the Italian half while eating a big plate of Pasta Puttanesca and drinking a glass of red wine! Maybe save the Indian food for when you're done with the book, though. As a champion worrier myself, I could very much relate. One of my favorite kinds of travel memoir. Even though she's said she's settled back down now, one hopes that at some point she'll go traveling again, so we can read a third book!
An incredibly well-written, funny, insightful tale of travel. I always appreciate reading a travel book that makes me feel like a complete hack as a writer myself!DeRoche does a great job of weaving deep philosophical ideas and concepts with the travel narrative in a way that makes this so much more than a memoir or travel tale.
It's rare that I feel this connected with an author and after reading both of Torre's books I can honestly say I am heavily invested in anything she writes. I feel like in the world of travel writing everything is shiny and clean and brings meaning, with Torre her honesty and curiosity stands out in the world of travel memoirs and is truly refreshing. Going along with her and Masha in Tuscany, you can see how one would be excited about tackling a second feat in India only to be surrounded by chaos and less than picturesque walking trails. I felt like I was there myself, questioning Gandhi and wondering where we were going to sleep at night. This is a great book about someone's deeper inner thoughts and ones that aren't always what you would expect.
What a wonderful read - somehow you feel like you're right there with Torre, walking those beautiful trails or eating that delicious little strawberry or surviving the madhouse of India - to the point that I was almost shocked when the book ended, and would have happily kept reading for another 100 pages! I hope there will be many more books (and many more adventures!) to live vicariously through. This was a great story and a wonderful book.
This book bares the soul and character of a traveler we should all emulate. It is travel writing at its finest and tells a fine tale while taking the reader along at every step. Torre De Roche is a traveler who sees the world rather than just looks at it.
I absolutely loved Torre's first book, but this story just didn't have enough meat to it. It's mostly about her walking by a highway, which just can't compete with sailing around the world. I still think she's a great writer and I love her blog, but this just didn't have enough good writing to fill a book. I could have read this as a long-form magazine article and it would have been a much better, much tighter story.
A book that is both heartbreaking and laugh-out-loud funny, I felt as though I was there with Torre through her magical days in Italy and through her terrible (yet, equally magical) days in India. It's a book about the joys of walking and the things we learn about ourselves, and the world, when our heart is ripped open.
