All the Value Tales are wonderful. Every child should read them around age 10.

Value books are great for kids. It was in good condition too. My kids loved these stories, and now the grandkids do also.

Don't have it yet, have enjoyed the other books in the series. hope to get it soon? The price was fair.

Ann Donegan Johnson uses her children's book series to meet two goals – to use the biography of a famous person as a device to demonstrate the results of applying / adhering to a positive human value.As an adult attempting to view this work from the perspective of the target audience, I found that “The Value of Tenacity – The Story of Maurice Richard” largely met its goals. The book gives the basic biography of the man known in Canda as “The Rocket”, and touches upon the highlights of his life – including (surprisingly to me) the “Richard Riots” which were triggered after the NHL suspended The Rocket.I am torn over the use of a “talking” hockey stick to personify the man's – or at the start, the boy's – “tenacity”. The book makes it clear that the stick isn't really talking – it's Maurice's imagination, and the emotion is actually inside of him – but I'm not sure that kids need the device. Plus, calling it “Slapper” … as the slapshot hadn't been invented / named yet, the author made a historical faux pax.Overall, a good story – both bio and moral lesson – for kids.RATING: 3 1/2 stars, rounded up to 4 stars where 1/2 stars are not permitted.

In this installment of the ValueTales series, Ann Donegan Johnson praises the tenacity of hockey player Maurice Richard (1921-2000).The book introduces eight-year-old Maurice Richard whose father helped him build an ice-skating rink in their backyard. Maurice kept working through the long process of filling the rink's wooden frame with layers and layers of ice. Maurice showed similar stick-to-it-iveness as he spent years developing his skills as an ice skater and hockey player. As an adult hockey player, Maurice faced injuries and other setbacks. But he never gave up. He is remembered as one of the best and toughest hockey players in the game.Like other books in the ValueTales series, this book uses a real-life person to exemplify an important value. It is suitable for reading by children in the later elementary school grades. A "Historical Facts" section at the book's end summarizes Richard's life in a single-page bio form suitable for adults.Closing quote: "You won't all be hockey superstars like Rocket Richard when you grow up. But if you do your very best, and keep at it no matter how much you'd like to give up, then one day, like Maurice Richard, you too will discover the rewards of tenacity." (p. 62)
