I've spent 14 years in the transportation industry, 3 years as a broker/agent. This book covers the basics but not near enough info to go out and open your own brokerage for sure. It offers the nuts and bolts but there is ALOT more to it than what is written in these 74 pages.Believe me when I say OJT is the best way to learn this business, not a book. This book offers some generic information and suggestions about the business otherwise it would be as thick as an encyclopedia. Can you make money as a freight broker or agent? Absolutely. Is it easy? Absolutely not. You have to pay your dues like anything else worthwhile but if you have thick skin and persistence like the author says the sky is the limit.The author mentions in page 7 once he did his research on the freight industry he went for broker training and off he went. He never mentions where he went for this training. His mention as a mgr at Burger King for $36,500/yr before getting into brokering was all of one paragraph and never brought up again so the book sub-title 'My Journey from a Fast Food Mgr to Freight Broker' really wasn't any 'journey' in the book.Almost word-for-word I noticed some pages described the freight broker business just exactly as Entrepreneur Magazine described in their manual How to Start a Freight Broker business. Coincidence? Highly doubtful.The transportation industry has it's own 'lingo'. If you can't speak the language or have any idea what a trucker is talking about when he says he's bob-tailing or he's over on his tandems you'll have a difficult time in this business until you're familiar with alot of the terminology. How much weight can a trucker legally have on his tandems do you know? Or on his steering axle? If you're clueless about this industry and have absolutely no knowledge about it, you certainly won't learn it from this book, or any other book.The author says in this book he has a website / blog (which he lists) that he provides additional info and updates on. But when I checked it out, it was incomplete and had only one posting total, updated in July 2013. I'm sure he had good intentions but he dropped the ball there. If he's THAT busy he could get a virtual secretary or a high school student for that matter to relay an occasional audio update for his blog and convert it to text so it at least looks more professional and is more current.Overall, this book is really nonsense for someone not familiar whatsoever with the transportation industry. You can find out just about all you need to know on the web if you drill deep enough just like this author did and just copied it all and put it into a book. OJT is the only way you'll learn this business, not from some vague book. The author has been fortunate to be in the top 10% in income as a freight broker - if he's telling the truth- and I applaud him for making it a successful career transition from managing a Burger King.

Have been interested in this line of work since '14. Found this online and decided 'why not'?Good overall read. LOTS of information on what to do to become a Broker and what it will cost for the various licenses, certificates and (of course), making sure the government gives you the magic wand-of-approval - AND - gets their 'slice o' the pie'.That said, it really doesn't go into the details of what the day-to-day operation is like, or what you'll be doing - or how to function as an agent or broker - a sorely missing detail if you're starting out. (guess that's why 'schools' make so much money teaching this).

Not sure who the editor was, but there are numerous grammar mistakes in the text. Aside from that, the book didn't really go into anything specific that you can't simply "google". I was hoping to hear more about the gentleman's story and what he did specifically to excel in the industry while knowing nothing about it. Some specific numbers and data would be nice. On the plus side, it was beneficial to read about the different types of paperwork and filings required to start a brokerage business; also the paragraph about the margins and what is generally acceptable for revenue was good. However, I could've just googled that info.

It was a quick, easy and educational read. It gives you the very basics of the business. I used this book and many YouTube videos, articles and other websites to better understand how to start my brokerage business. So far we've started... waiting on the results.

Unless you have at least five years of good credit history, you will not be starting up a freight broker business. The book is not a waste of time, it is very informative. However, do be disillusioned that you can start up you own freight broker business without a reputable history of having all your ducks lined in row with financial lenders. If you have the luxury to borrow against your house or some other type of collateral, it is very possible to swing this operation. But you will be busy attending to the details, you are not going to be wandering around town like a fat cat thinking about the stack of money coming your way. There are risks involved, and you will be taking them with your money. Would I do it? Yes, I would give it try. A little prior logistics experience, excellent people skills, and being able to think as you dot the I's and cross the T's. And that is only the "basic everyday reality" of this business. Keep the screw-ups to a minimum and you would be fine. K.I.S.S.

I learned a lot of cool tricks from the Playing With Fire web site, so I could hardly wait for the book to be published. The book is filled with a lot of great tips and tricks (many from the web site) for Fireworks users, both novice and pros. This is NOT a how-to-use Fireworks book, you already need to know the basics, but its tutorials are clear and easy to follow. I only wish that the book expanded a lot more over the original web site. Even so, I strongly recommend Playing With Fire.

Without a doubt this is the most valuable book on Fireworks I own. It expands your creativity and opens up an entire world of techniques, effects and all-round nifty ideas. I'm so grateful to the authors for writing it!

Actually, I had a very different- somewhat typical review planned for "Playing With Fire", when I read a negative review that was posted on this site. 'They' were disappointed that the book had 'nothing to do with fireworks 4' . After reading in utter amazement I realized 'the rub'. The difficulty is confusing 'how to do Fireworks 4 MECHANICS' with 'now that you have it downloaded, now what? I would bet that if that disgruntled reviewer purchased Joe Lowery's Fireworks Bible first, they would come out with a wealth of 'mechanical' knowledge covering material for the very elementary user thru to the advanced. And sometime along the way, I have absolutely no doubt that that very same reviewer, unless they already had an extensive (emphasize the word - extensive) art background, would begin hungering for a book that showed them how to put all these fabulous tools to work - creating artwork. 'Playing with Fire' admittedly does not begin with..."so you just downloaded Fireworks 4 and want to know where to start." There are many manuals and books for that. Where 'Playing with Fire' does begin, is when the 'computerartist' has finished the basic tutorials, copy-catted what he was taught and added his own little 'bent' to the image or idea, but now is ready to develop his very own creations from 'soup to nuts'. But how is he going to do that? Playing with Fire closes 'the gap' between those who have Fireworks 4 and those who can create spectacular work using Fireworks 4. Not only does the book teach mechanical aspects beyond the 'baby basics'(I can't count the number of insights I received and I began with Fireworks 2!), it dissects artwork using a software that is already within the user's hands. There is plenty of artwork 'how to' manuals out there, but many of them presuppose you know where to access and apply your tools.It takes the reader step by step, point by point showing you not only what to 'draw' or paint - but where to access the tools within Fireworks. It was because of this book I now know how to create an effect that I have been seeking the answer to for nearly two years! Because I saw my answer was in that book, I need to confess - I actually went into a bookstore of all things (unheard of thing for me to do since ...!) and paid ... MORE!!! - because I simply couldn't wait a moment longer. Then lo and behold I found ideas I didn't even know you could do in Fireworks! So, Dear Reader, if you want to have the answers to the questions before you even know you need to ask them, about 'how do they do that?' artwork using Fireworks 4, get this book.

"Playing With Fire" is one of those books that readers are going to love or are going to hate. You will love this book if you already have been introduced to Fireworks in the past and are in search for some new ideas for graphical design. You will hate this book if you are trying to learn the fundamentals of how to use Fireworks 4. If you are a beginner you should work through the Fireworks tutorial that came with the software and possibly another beginner level book such as "Dreamweaver 4 Fireworks 4 Studio: A Beginner's Guide". If you already have used Fireworks and are intermediate or advanced then this book should be in your library. When I first read through the book I felt as though it needed more volume to justify the price, after all most books on Fireworks are 500 pages or more. Then I realized as I experimented with some of the projects that this book is about creativity and originality. The thing that sets most web design apart from the crowd is graphics that catch the eye of your audience and make them want to read further. This book has several design elements that most Fireworks users will find as valuable inspiration that they may apply to their web pages. "Playing With Fire" does not teach you how to use Fireworks, it teaches you how to take the next step with Fireworks and create professional designs.

The authors of this book are determined to play to the weaknesses of Fireworks, as if trying to prove it's a better image editor than the big gun, Photoshop. In doing so, they completely ignore the strengths and value of the programme as a comping and layout tool for web design. Whole chapters are devoted to...Fireworks' text abilities, while very little is made of it's superior vector capabilities. Also to it's detriment, the book is structured in response to newsgroup postings and so plays to the intelligence of your average usenet poster, seeking technical support. If you're looking for "recipes" for bog standard, dated looking web graphics and effects, this is the book for you. However, if you're looking to discover and utilise the power of Fireworks, I highly recommend Fireworks 4 Expert Edge, a far more valuable use of money and time. For some reason, PWF has been positioned as some kind of companion to Al Sparber's DW4 Magic--don't be taken in, as it's not project-oriented, reveals little beyond it's own narrow objectives and is riddled with inaccuracies and poorly written instruction. Coupled with a useless CD to boot.

Nowen's book, Life of the Beloved, is filled with many inspirational thoughts. On p. 36 he states:"Listening to the voice {of the Beloved} with great inner attentiveness, I hear at my center words that say, " I have called you by name from the very beginning. You are mine and I am yours.You are my Beloved, on you my favor rest.I have molded you in the depths of the earth and knitted you together in your mother's womb.I have carved you in the palms of my hands and hidden you in the shadow of my embrace." Throughout the text Nowen calls us to a deep and abiding relationship with our God. He has done the work in his own soul and it is very evident in the text. He does not impose his beliefs but rather calls the person to make the choice for themselves. The seduction of the Beloved is strong and real for many who take seriously their relationship with God. Nouwen provides us with prayers of contemplation for us to ponder/pray and finally act. At 156 pages it is a great source of solace and joy!

How often do we long for someone to walk beside us, as Jesus did with his disciples on the road to Emmaus, and interpret scripture for us…tell us how to apply it to real everyday lives? He speaks in the context of natural cycles and has a truly moving reflection on the relationship between life and death. “As the Beloved, I am called to trust that life is a preparation for death as a final act of giving.” He distinguishes between a “good death” and a “bad death.” Without being syrupy or unrealistic about the pain of death and loss, he speaks convincingly of our lives being like a seed that must die to bear fruit. “How different would our life be were we truly able to trust that it multiplied in being given away! How different would our life be if we could but believe that every little act of faithfulness, every gesture of love, every word of forgiveness, every little bit of joy and peace will multiply and multiply as long as there are people to receive it…and that—even then—there will be leftovers!”LifeBelovedBookCoverOne fascinating insight I gleaned from this book’s pages is the notion that there is a distinction between talents and gifts, and that sometimes—perhaps often—our true gifts are buried beneath our talents. “We may have only a few talents, but we have many gifts. Our gifts are the many ways in which we express our humanity. They are part of who we are: friendship, kindness, patience, joy, peace, forgiveness, gentleness, love, hope, trust, and many others. These are the true gifts we have to offer to each other.” That is something I’ll be thinking about for a long time.Ironically, as Nouwen relates in the epilogue, the book did not seem to resonate with Fred and his friends as much as Nouwen had hoped it would. For him, “it was writing for the ‘converted’ and not for truly secular people.” It did, in fact, appeal to thousands of Christian pilgrims who struggle through life trying to apply the Christian principles they’ve learned to the situations they encounter day in and day out.It certainly resonated with me.So without Fred, he would never have written the book, but it turned out to be more helpful to believers than to non-believers. “It is the mystery of God using his secular friends to instruct his disciples.”

Nouwen is a brilliant man and an authentic struggling Christian. He has much to offer the reader in provoking self-reflection and defining himself in the Christian community.He takes some OT passages, about God knowing us long before we were physically formed and born. And of course Catholic doctrine for him. His comments have provoked me to consider my position a bit more...I am not a big pro-choice person, and I do believe that life in-utero is still life. But I am also a physician and have seen consequences of children born with anencephaly (no brain) or very severe defects which may challenge the marriage of the parents, and the child. Many things can be fixed even by surgery on the fetus in-utero....but many still cannot. For these and for other things like rape and incest I strongly disagree with the absolutist Catholic position. Of the whole book, these few comments bothered me maybe the most.

Many years ago I realize you cannot teach me to be a carpenter unless I learn the language. Margie Borg helped me to see that to be a Christian you got to learn the language. Free was asking the wrong question. What he wanted to know required him to learn the language of Christianity. Then he had to apply it to his secular words and world. Nouwin could not make Christian language into secular language Free had to put the to together and decide which made sense to him. He could not choose between God and s Secular with both to consider. Disciples are learners. The is what Free and Nouwin are doing . Thank you Brother Nouwin.

Though the book was written as a lengthy letter to a friend, Nouwen explains how we are chosen, blessed, broken, and given to the world as God's beloved, a chapter devoted to each aspect of being a Christian, with a seventh chapter on living as the beloved of the Creator. An interesting epilogue celebrates the deepening friendship resulting from his friend's reading, but regretting that he did not convert his atheist reader of the existence and love of Nouwen's God

Value books are great for kids. It was in good condition too. My kids loved these stories, and now the grandkids do also.

Ann Donegan Johnson uses her children's book series to meet two goals – to use the biography of a famous person as a device to demonstrate the results of applying / adhering to a positive human value.As an adult attempting to view this work from the perspective of the target audience, I found that “The Value of Tenacity – The Story of Maurice Richard” largely met its goals. The book gives the basic biography of the man known in Canda as “The Rocket”, and touches upon the highlights of his life – including (surprisingly to me) the “Richard Riots” which were triggered after the NHL suspended The Rocket.I am torn over the use of a “talking” hockey stick to personify the man's – or at the start, the boy's – “tenacity”. The book makes it clear that the stick isn't really talking – it's Maurice's imagination, and the emotion is actually inside of him – but I'm not sure that kids need the device. Plus, calling it “Slapper” … as the slapshot hadn't been invented / named yet, the author made a historical faux pax.Overall, a good story – both bio and moral lesson – for kids.RATING: 3 1/2 stars, rounded up to 4 stars where 1/2 stars are not permitted.

But he never gave up. This book is great if you're interested in tree identifying, which I have recently taken up. There are multiple detailed photos and descriptions per tree, which I love. The paper is high quality and while it's big, it is light enough to take out with you for some field work. Downsides: the page numbers don't always line up (it skips from page 224 to page 257, then from 288 to 225) which isn't good for a reference book, as at first you will be depending on the index to find content. Also, I wish they elaborated more on the Willamette Valley, as that's where I'm from - there's more Eastern Oregon shrubs than anything.

The pictures and descriptions in this book are great-if you can identify what you're looking at, which is no small feat. If you have a basic understanding of botany and dendrology to the point of knowing the plant or tree family by observing the specimen then I imagine this book would be useful. If not, you might have to flip through 100 or more pages looking at pictures trying to find a match. This book would greatly benefit from better identifying tools such as a dichotomous key.

A terrific resource for anyone who wants to know more about the trees and plants they encounter while outdoors. It comes especially handy while hiking with the kids because I can use the book as an excuse to rest for a couple of minutes while I identify the same species of shrub or tree for the 20th time.I own 40 acres in the mountains and have used this book extensively. It is set-up such that identification is quick and easy. It's also a fun learning tool to use with my kids!I have owned a couple of other tree and shrub identification books and find this superior to all of the others, including the highly touted Audubon Society identification book.

well illustrated and covers a lot of plants in a relatively small portable size. the treatment of the many different and frankly confusing willow species is excellent. not perfect with some obvious errors (for example ptelia crenulata/California hoptree is (rightly) called a California endemic but the range map shows it growing in southern Oregon) but for such a large and diverse area with so many plants it's hard to see how it could be. .well worth buying and using in the area it covers.

Informative and includes a myriad of species, more than I would have imagined. I only gave it 4 stars, vs. 5, due to the not-so-sharp quality of the pictures, which are in color. If the photography had been as sharp as they should have been, then this would have been a stellar, 5 star book. But, it still very good to have, regarding knowledge about the so many types of trees and shrubs there are, here, in the Pacific Northwest, which is surprising to learn and become aware of.

This is a very comprehensive work and can definitely be taken into the field with you. Not too big, and photos have enough detail to be helpful.

Well written, and has useful information for trees for which I know the names. I find it hard to find a tree in the book when I do not already know the name or general species. I do not like the ”flexibound” binding on the book, but binding type was my choice and does not impact quality of book content.

Nice book. The flex cover or whatever they call it is waterproof so, being in the NW, it helps. Lots of detail but also a lot of BS. Still worth it!
