The Divine Comedy

From Booklist

Critic extraordinaire James (Cultural Amnesia, 2007) is also a poet (Opal Sunset: Selected Poems, 2008), and he has been working his way to this daring project ever since he was in Florence in the mid-1960s while studying at Cambridge, as he explains in his rousing introduction. His companion, whom he would soon marry, the future Dante scholar Prudence Shaw, revealed to him the “great secret of Dante’s masterpiece,” the fact that it possesses both “interior intensity” and propulsion. How, James wondered, could a translator re-create this dynamic? Deciding that Dante’s terza rima is too strained in English, he uses robust, rollicking quatrains. He also avoids footnotes, which so rudely interrupt the flow and drama of this defining classic, by working necessary explanations into the poem itself. James’ revitalizing translation allows this endlessly analyzed, epic, archetypal “journey to salvation” to once again stride, whirl, blaze, and sing. Anyone heretofore reluctant to pick up The Divine Comedy will discover that James’ bold, earthy, rhythmic and rhyming, all-the-way live English translation fulsomely and brilliantly liberates the profound humanity of Dante’s timeless masterpiece. --Donna Seaman

Review

“Clive James's translation of The Divine Comedy is a remarkable achievement: not a scowling marble Dante of sublime set pieces but a living, breathing poet shifting restlessly through a dizzying succession of moods, perceptions and passions. Under James's uncanny touch, seven long centuries drop away, and the great poem is startlingly fresh and new.” - Stephen Greenblatt, Harvard University, author of The Swerve“This is the translation that many of us had abandoned all hope of finding. Clive James's version is the only one that conveys Dante’s variety, depth, subtlety, vigor, wit, clarity, mystery and awe in rhymed English stanzas that convey the music of Dante’s triple rhymes. This book lets Dante’s genius shine through as it never did before in English verse, and is a reminder that James’s poetry has always been his finest work.” - Edward Mendelson, Columbia University“A vigorous, poetic paraphrase of the Comedy.” - Library Journal“Daring… Deciding that Dante’s terza rima is too strained in English, he uses robust, rollicking quatrains… James’ revitalizing translation allows this endlessly analyzed, epic, archetypal ‘journey to salvation’ to once again stride, whirl, blaze, and sing. Anyone heretofore reluctant to pick up The Divine Comedy will discover that James’ bold, earthy, rhythmic and rhyming, all-the-way live English translation fulsomely and brilliantly liberates the profound humanity of Dante’s timeless masterpiece.” - Booklist“Do we really need yet another translation of Dante’s world-famous journey through the three parts of the Catholic afterlife? We might, if the translator is both as eminent, and as skillful, as Clive James… It is a wonder to see the light cast by the whole.” - Publishers Weekly“Seeking to preserve Dante’s ‘infinitely variable rhythmic pulse,’ James makes an inspired metrical choice… The greatest virtue of James’s translation is his gift for infusing poetry in the least likely places… James’s austere volume achieves something remarkable: It lets Dante’s poetry shine in all its brilliance.” - Joseph Luzzi, New York Times Book Review“James gives us something sublime: a new way of reading a classic work. James' version is not merely a mirrored word, but a transfigured word. As such, it will no doubt enter the essential Dante canon, and remain there for years to come.” - Earl Pike, Cleveland Plain Dealer“A translation for readers who are culturally engaged, willing to follow lengthy narratives, and curious about free will and the soul. A Dante for fans of Mad Men?” - Camila Domonoske, NPR.org“Hugely enjoyable… James allows us a valuable new glimpse into a supremely imaginative mind at work when thought and faith remained indivisible―before God, too, was forced from Paradise.” - Tom Bissell, Harper's“Perfect for the Don Drapers in your life.” - Megan O’Grady, Vogue.com

I highly recommend this translation of Dante's Inferno. For many years, Ciardi's translation has been the standard and it has much to recommend it. But Ciardi's rhymed stanzas are looser, wordier, and less faithful to the original than Thornton's blank verse. Thornton brings us closer to what Dante wrote. And the excellent notes at the end of each canto help bring this masterpiece to life for a modern reader.

With decades of study and meticulous craftsmanship, Dr. Peter Thornton has offered his translation of “The Inferno.” I do not know Italian, but I have read a couple of other translations of “The Inferno,” and I found this one the best for several reasons. First, the poetry is vivid. I felt like orange flames and the stench of Sulphur were my companions as much as were Dante and Virgil. The verse itself is a second reason I liked this translation. The meter – iambic pentameter, the ordinary meter of the English language – does not intrude into the poetry itself. That is, I wasn’t conscious of stretching of words or awkward diction for the sake of the meter. You can enjoy the translation without bothering to read the footnotes, but once you start, you are off on another journey, equally absorbing – this one through contemporary (to Dante) Florentine history, Christian metaphors and allusions, Roman legend and mythology, and Catholic scholars from Augustine on.Read the translation; savor the footnotes. There’s always room for a fresh version of hell.

THANK YOU !! I've been trying to expose my kids to more of the classics. But every translation of the Divine Comedy I've come across has been so difficult that I couldn't even get through Hell (felt like hell trying to read it). UNTIL NOW !!! Thank you Mr. Douglas Neff for this translation. It keeps all the flavor, tension, and character; and stays true to the original story. Reading this translation, I find myself more absorbed and engaged in trying to understand what Dante was trying to get across, and why he picked certain persons for certain levels, and doing research into some of the people, places, vices, etc. that he talks about, instead of spending hours trying to decipher the actual language of the translation. My 7 year old is totally engaged, while at the same time, my 15 year old and I are getting into some very interesting discussions (Dante put Pope Celestine V with those souls who neither heaven nor hell want, because he resigned as Pope . . . I wonder what that means for old former pope Benedict XVI / cardinal Ratzinger who just did the same thing). And none of us are getting ground down by having to stop and try and translate the language.I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get this book. You will not be disappointed. I'm now trying to find a comparable translation of Purgatory and Paradise so we can complete the story.

Dante's THE INFERNO is a classic. Written around 1321, the book predates most of the classics, except Homer's works of course. But even before Shakespeare, this book heralded in an uncommonly twisted and almost perverse story of Dante's descent into Hell and his description of everything he sees and those he meets. It's eloquently written. Not necessarily an easy read but it does tribute to the language and reminds the reader that our vernacular has so much more color than the reductio ad absurdum we see being used today. Dante's descriptions of the nightmare that sinners endure at each level is pretty graphic, sometimes bordering on horrifying, and who knows, he might even be credited with the first narrative on the subject of flesh-eating zombies which are so popular today. The narrative also gives the reader a feel for certain historical relevancies of that and earlier times and how Dante saw the world. This particular version of the book, by John Ciardi, provides excellent descriptive notes after each section, clarifying things mentioned in the story so the reader stays on track. Lastly, I could not help but wonder if the Vatican of that time didn't encourage the book to be written simply because of its thematic message of what happens to sinners, particularly those who sin against God and the Church or become apostates. It certainly provides compelling imagery to anyone who believes in Heaven and Hell. Add it to your reading arsenal - it's worth the read.

#86,472 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I bought this for my 6 year old son who loves cooking and am very disappointed. There are no pictures of the food and it is all black and white. Not appealing at all for a kid much less an adult like myself. If it wasn't from "Santa", I'd be returning it.

This cookbook is excellent! I read a lot of reviews for different books prior to purchasing this one for my 10 year old daughter. This is a great cookbook! The directions are easy to follow and they are really tasty. I don't think there's been anything that hasn't been good so far! It's paperback and a good size for her to manage when she's cooking.

Bought this for my 10 year old for Easter. She LOVES to cook and this has been a good introductory book for her to be able to complete a full recipe without any help from me. So far all the recipes she has done are simple with few ingredients so the prep and clean-up aren't overwhelming for her either. The Chocolate chocolate chip cookies are our favorite

The recipes are wonderful and directions are clear and concise. However, it needs photos of each recipe/product! Being a kids cookbook I would think photos would be a prominent feature, but they are not.

My 8 year old granddaughter and I had a lot of fun cooking from this book. I made notes in it and dated the items we cooked so she would have it later in life.

My stepdaughter LOVES this book to the point that now she likes cooking. I would buy it again a million times. I think it's great for kids (she is 10 years old). I would still supervise while kids do this but it teaches them to do things more than many adults can do, so it's worth it!

Bought this for my niece who likes to cook. We have a copy ourselves and I think it is a very good cookbook for kids--the recipes turn out good and there is a nice variety. The recipes are very kid-friendly. There is even a recipe for homemade tomato soup! I have use the mac and cheese and the double choc cookie recipes several times myself. There are lots of good tips for kids, too. I wish I had had this cookbook when I was growing up!

This was a gift for my 8 year old son who asked for a cookbook for Christmas. We have enjoyed making several recipes together, although some he can do mostly by himself. It’s all fairly simple with basic ingredients. Cute little games and fun facts throughout it as well.

As a hybrid Khargal, he has many traits of his Sire including the horns and tail , wings and the ability to turn into stone. He has learned from his friend that the Khargals have activated the beacon, and all Khargals will be rescued. Only problem is that his Sire has been buried for a very , very long time , and the building he was buried in is being demolished. So he has to find his father AND collect his Sigil ! Kind of hard to do , since he is not entirely sure where his father is exactly!!Meline is the great , great relation to a famous builder, where Ric's Father is supposedly at the foot of his building . She unknowingly has information that Roc needs in order to find his father. As Roc over hears this information, he decided to help her , help him .If only it were that simple !!!This story was exciting and witty and funny. I am looking forward to reading more about these KHARGALS 😀😀😀

This is sound advice. I've read every book this author has written (on kindle unlimited) and have enjoyed each one incredibly. I like her so much, I've bought a few to read and re-read!! She always writes this amazing blend of wonderfully fithly erotica, and heartwarming love and romance. It says in her bio she's only a part-time author... I have literally messaged her and BEGGED for her to go full-time i love her writing so much. Anyways, onto this book.Told in DPOV. Great characters, that u quickly develop a repore with. It's fairly fast paced, and I can't help but fall in love with the H\h; both of whom are incredibly strong, with very relatable weaknesses and doubts. It's wonderful to see such great characters grow and develops with, and because of, each other. As always, Mizz West never disappoints on the steamy side of things! As a fair warning, there are definitely elements of bondage, but it never seems to be over done, and most importantly, ur never left wondering how either character feels. She always let's u know how much the heroine enjoys it, and most importantly (in my opinion) how much the H cares for the h. Not just in his head either... She tends to be very good about having the H express himself IN WORDS to the h, which is kinda a big deal for me. she's also great about not pushing the bounds too far into what ppl might consider abuse, unlike some authors.I can highly recommend both t his author, AND this book.AS WELL AS ANY SHE'S EVER WRITTEN!!!!Can we please start a campaign to have wrote full time??? Who wants to join me?!?

This was a great addition to this series. I love how each author keeps their own voice while still making the stories feel intermingled and carry a similar feel. This story was great with plenty of how and downs. Roc was hot and crafty and had plenty of his own issues to deal with. His struggle with being stuck between two societies and how that affected him was described well. And while Meline didn't ask some questions I feel like I probably would have all her reactions were still realistic without being over dramatic. She has her own issues too but she was able to grow through them and become stronger. And once again the tail may have been one of my favorite parts. Excitingly good book filled with sci-fi , romance , action and suspense; would recommend.

I am loving the Khargals. Each story is unique and Hard as Rock is no exception. It has humor, great gargoyle sex and a lot of action. Roc was born on earth to Petronus and a human mother. Meline goes on vacation with her grandfather's journal looking for answers. And of course the Rose Syndicate is watching their every move and trying to get the sigil. I thoroughly enjoyed Roc and Meline's story.

I have been waiting for this series for a while, I even clean up my KU account, so I have enough space to get all the books at once!Binge time! So… back to the book at hand.A thousand years ago the Khargals crash landed on earth; soon after the crash, they realized that their Sigil or beacon was not working, they were stranded. Fast forward to current times, the Sigils have mysteriously activated, after all this time rescue in on his way!! There is only one problem, Roc’s father, one of the original Khargals stranded on earth has retreated to his Duramna or stone form after Roc’s mother’s died during childbirth, and his Sigil is nowhere to be found. The time is ticking, if Roc cannot find the Sigil on time, it will auto-destruct. In his quest to find the Sigil, Roc discovers Meline, the descendant of one his father human friend. And that my friend is how this adventure starts 😊 This book has everything I love, is fast-paced, great sex, full of action romance with a smart kick-ass heroine that knows how to get s**t done. I had a s**t eating grin the whole time I was reading this book. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

Excellent guide. I purchased this book in Kindle format to take with me on Pilgrimage. For myself, this is a book which could have stayed at home, and been more useful in hard copy format. The text often refers to various pictorial plates, which I would have preferred to tab so that I could go back and forth to review while reading. I did not lower the stars due to my preference, as the guide is comprehensive.

This book came highly recommended by my tour guide in Israel. If you have any interest in biblical/ancient architecture, history or theology of the Holy Land, this book is a must read!

If you want an easy-to-carry quick reference guide that sums up much of what's in the 5-volume archaeological books with info on all the sites in Israel, this is fantastic. Good for a trip guide or something you can use in a historical geography class when you want information but don't need the entire site report. Fr. Murphy-O'Connor did a wonderful job with this.

I bought this landmark book for a trip, and also downloaded it to carry in my bag while traveling. It's an invaluable explanation of so many sites, in depth, by an expert with tons of experience in the area. It's not an ordinary guidebook, it's for anyone who really want to know the details of the history, architecture, religious meanings, and legends and narratives that belong to the various sites. It's a gold mine of information.

This book was superb. Written by a top-notch Scripture scholar, and an archaeologist to boot. It sifts the probable from the likely from the possible, which means that when Murphy-O'Connor pronounces a site or a building authentic, you sit up and take notice. Next to the Bible, this was my bible in the Holy Land. I've recommended it to many people.

When you go to the Holy Land, read it every night before you visit the sights. You will understand what you are going to see, know what to look for, have a better experience, and retain more detailed knowledge. This book helped me to sort fact from fiction. It enriched my biblical imagination and benefits my prayer life and preaching.

we love fancy nancy however this is not easy to read and is not in level one reading level. its basically a normal fancy nancy book placed in a I can read level 1 book. very disappointed

Just OK, there's another Fancy Nancy book about Stars that is much better

Bettyville: A Memoir, by George Hodgman

Review

Nautilus Book Awards Gold WinnerPraise for Bettyville“A remarkable, laugh-out-loud book . . . Rarely has the subject of elder care produced such droll human comedy, or a heroine quite on the mettlesome order of Betty Baker Hodgman. For as much as the book works on several levels (as a meditation on belonging, as a story of growing up gay and the psychic cost of silence, as metaphor for recovery), it is the strong-willed Betty who shines through.” —The New York Times“A lovely memoir . . .You won’t finish this tale dry-eyed.” —People, Book of the Week“A gorgeously constructed memoir . . . Hodgman creates an unforgettable portrait of his mother, Betty—a strong-willed nonagenarian struggling against the slow-motion breakdown of her mind and body. He evokes her with wit and tenderness.” —The New York Times Book Review“Without a doubt my favorite book of the year. Wise, witty, and heartbreaking . . . a surprisingly profound and hilarious look at aging, mothers and sons, fathers and sons, growing up gay and small-town life in America.” —Nathan Lane, “Who Read What: Books of the Year 2015,” The Wall Street Journal“A humorous, bittersweet account of Hodgman’s caring for his aging, irascible mother.” —Vanity Fair“Hodgman has written what will be seen, even years from now, as the quintessential book on taking care. . . . His desire to empathize, his focus on goodness, his search for hope allow him to find the beauty in the hour of now.” —Chicago Tribune“An intimate, heartfelt portrait of a mother and son, each at the crossroads of life . . . Hodgman’s sharp wit carries the book ever forward.” —Minneapolis Star-Tribune  “A superb memoir . . . Hodgman is by turns wry, laugh-out-loud funny, self-deprecating, insecure to the point of near suicide, and an attentive caregiver despite occasional, understandable resentments. . . . I have read several hundred American memoirs; I would place Bettyville in the top five.” —Steve Weinberg, Kansas City Star “In his tender, sardonic, and fearless account of life with Betty—who has never acknowledged that her son is gay—Hodgman delivers an epic unfolding of his lifelong search for acceptance and love.” —The Atlanta Journal-Constitution“Hodgman paints a witty and poignant portrait of a son and his mother reconciling their differences and learning, among other things, how to cook, come to grips with caretaking, understand unspoken sexuality, and treat each other with patience, love, and self-respect. Surely we all have a beautifully complex and hilarious (if not semi-dysfunctional) relationships with our mothers, but none of us are likely to commemorate it with the skill and humor of Hodgman.” —Los Angeles Magazine“An exquisitely written memoir about the complicated but deeply genuine love a son feels for his courageous, headstrong, vulnerable mother in the twilight of her life. George Hodgman is stunningly clear-eyed and yet so darned big-hearted. Bettyville is just wonderful.” —Jeannette Walls, author of The Glass Castle   “The idea of a cultured gay man leaving New York City to care for his aging mother in Paris, Missouri, is already funny, and George Hodgman reaps that humor with great charm. But then he plunges deep, examining the warm yet fraught relationship between mother and son with profound insight and understanding. This book looks outside, too, offering a moving lament for small-town America. Hodgman tenderly evokes the time before family farms and small businesses were replaced by meth labs and Walmarts. Yet he’s not sentimental about that lost world—he knew its cruelties firsthand. As George and his mother come to terms with one another at the end of her days, the book begins to shimmer with something much more rare than love: a boundless, transcendent, and simple kindness. Bettyville is a beautiful book about the strange plenitude that comes from finally letting go of everything.” —Alison Bechdel, author of Fun Home   “Bettyville is a beautifully crafted memoir, rich with humor and wisdom. George Hodgman has created an unforgettable book about mothers and sons, and about the challenges that come with growing older and growing up.” —Will Schwalbe, author of The End of Your Life Book Club“This is a superior memoir, written in a witty and episodic style, yet at times it’s heartbreaking . . . filled with a lifetime’s worth of reflection and story after fascinating story.” —Library Journal (starred review)“Hodgman writes with wit and empathy about all the loss he’s confronted with. Betty’s poor health is mirrored by the failure of towns like Paris, whose farms and lumberyards are now Walmarts and meth labs. Coming out in the age of AIDS, he lost the people he was close to when he had nowhere else to turn. . . . That doesn’t mean Bettyville is without humor—far from it. Paris eccentrics (one woman shampoos her hair in the soda fountain) compete with Hodgman’s colleagues in the office of Vanity Fair. . . . This is a portrait of a woman in decline, but still very much alive and committed to getting the lion’s share of mini-Snickers at every opportunity. When things are left unsaid between parents and children, it leaves a hurt that can never be completely repaired, but love and dedication can make those scarred places into works of art. Bettyville is one such masterpiece.” —BookPage“The book is instantly engaging, as Hodgman has a wry sense of humor, one he uses to keep others at a distance. Yet the book is also devastatingly touching. Betty is one tough cookie, and she is crumbling. Hodgman as a young man came out around the same time AIDS did, complicating his already complicated feelings immeasurably. There’s a lot for Hodgman to handle, yet he does, despite the urge to give in to his own sadness and his own former drug addiction. A tender, resolute look at a place, literal and figurative, baby boomers might find themselves.” —Booklist “Bettyville is a gorgeous memoir. I was completely engaged, not just because of George Hodgman’s great ear and his sense of timing, but because he delivers Betty to us in such a manner that she steps off the page . I felt transported to a better place, to a time period and a web of relationships with which we can all identify,  no matter where we grew up. Beyond the humor and the pathos, the quotidian and the bizarre, there remain profound lessons about life and love that I will carry away.” —Abraham Verghese, author of Cutting for Stone “George Hodgman achieves something stunning with this book—by paying such deep, loving attention to his mother’s (admittedly colorful) life, he offers us the chance to pay close attention to our own strange and beautiful Bettyvilles, which in the end is all we can ask of any art. This bejeweled pillbox is rich and funny and heartwrenching and might just you cure you of your ills; if those ills include loneliness or feeling like you don’t belong—you are not alone.” —Nick Flynn, author of Another Bullshit Night in Suck City “One of the great benefits of reading memoir is that it offers the reader more people to love. I love Betty, and I love George Hodgman, whose beautiful book this is. Read Bettyville. Laugh, weep, and be grateful.” —Abigail Thomas, author of A Three Dog Life “Bettyville reminded me of some Homeric legend, complete with treacherous chimeras and ravenous gorgons, except that it is told with such grace, wit, and spirited generosity that you hardly sense you are on a fragile bark, adrift on a perilous sea. This story of a sensitive Midwestern boy coming to terms with his homosexuality, his drug addiction, his clueless parents, his all-out war with shame, is nothing short of epic. It begins as a simple trip home from fast-track Manhattan to Paris, Missouri, to care for a failing mother, but by the time we are through, we have descended to an underworld, witnessed a plague, traveled all nine circles of hell, and emerged exhilarated by the grit and valor of our remarkable guide. It is, in every sense, a tale about the power of love.” —Marie Arana, author of American Chica “With great tenderness, honesty, and a searing, sardonic humor, George Hodgman has written a love letter to his mother, at once a penance and a tribute.  In doing so, he has given us Betty, a character for the ages. This is a beautiful, illuminating book.” —Dani Shapiro, author of Devotion “When I read the first few pages of Bettyville, I immediately connected. The detail is poetry and, yes, George Hodgman tells a story that is all our stories if we grow up different, struggling not to hurt those we treasure. But what I will most remember is the human struggle of Betty—the woman at the window, the woman at the piano, the woman whose desire to help others represents the best of small-town America. The silence she was taught and the complications of our parents’ journeys to be there for us, as best they could, is what I will take away from Bettyville, where she will always reside. Hers is the quiet love that outlasts the distances and lets us survive.” —Richard Blanco, United States inaugural poet, author of The Prince of los Cucuyos: A Miami Childhood

Bettyville is the author's memoir of returning to small-town Missouri to care for his ailing mother. Woven into the story of his mother's sickness and decline are Hodgman's memories of growing up in a middle-America, small-town, sometimes close-minded community. Like most of us Hodgman has mixed feelings about his hometown. Paris, Missouri certainly provided its share of problems for Hodgman (many centered around his sexuality), but it also provided positive ones, ones for which he feels nostalgia. Many of those same traits are reflected in Hodgman's mother, and family and community distinctly intertwine and Hodgman reminisces.Overall this is a well-thought and presented memoir, dealing with experiences (nostalgia, aging parents, going home again) that affect many of us. It is well worth reading.

I'm a hard sell. When someone tells me a book is funny, I invariably wind up wondering why s/he found it funny -- because I definitely did not. I tend to ignore most reviews of books (or movies), preferring to decide for myself on the merits, or lack of them in a given piece of work. That said, I chose to review Bettyville because I was actually intrigued by the cover--the very reason we've always been told not to judge a book. But the photograph had an authentic feel to it that rang a small bell for me. So I got the book. And I truly loved it. I loved George Hodgman and his mother; his father, too.Hodgman's great gift is to present the connective tissue between reader and writer, the thoughts and feelings and events that knit us together in a manner achieved only by the most profoundly truthful and deeply felt telling of lives lived. In spite of our obvious differences (male/female, straight/gay, etc) Hodgman's feelings mirror my own in too many ways to enumerate. He made me laugh repeatedly; he moved me often. I felt his irritation, his anger with himself, and his good-hearted impulses toward others. I knew him because he reveals himself so completely, so courageously, so hilariously. For example: "Just a typical American family, torn between love and homicide, but united in our own way." One just has to laugh at something so absolutely true. This book deserves recognition and accolades. Read it and feel your heart open and then constrict, then open again. The parent in me wants to adopt the little boy in George. The child in me wants to be friends with that lonely boy whose isolation feels remembered to me. And the sister in me wants to help George prepare some treats for Betty, and then persuade her to put on her comfy old wrecked sandals so that we can all go out for a nice, easy walk.

It looks like you'll be enthused or underwhelmed, and I'm with the 1/3 of the reviewers who are underwhelmed. In fact, after hearing so many good things, I was disappointed. Certainly it jumps around from theme to theme, but that didn't bother me as it does some other reviewers. It simply wasn't compelling; the treatment of being gay in the 1980s, dealing with the dementia of a parent, coming home to a declining middle America -- all good topics, but none treated with the incisiveness and specialness I expected in a book so highly regarded by so many. On the plus side, the author is very clever and very witty; many lines are very special, and I laughed out loud a number of times, which I'm not induced to do easily. For a native Missourian (I'm a Missourian but not a native), the descriptions (albeit with some liberties) of real places and times will be special to you (so my fellow book clubbers tell me). So, go ahead and read it -- it's a quick read, and the humor is worth it. Just don't expect so much, and if you start with that mindset, you might feel like its a 4-star or 5-star read.

"Bettyville reminded me of some Homeric legend, complete with treacherous chimeras and ravenous gorgons, except that it is told with such grace, wit, and spirited generosity that you hardly sense you are on a fragile bark, adrift on a perilous sea."Wow! Writers kill for reviews like this. George Hodgman has my admiration for completing and publishing "Bettyville," and I feel bad because I wasn't as moved by it as others were, both here and in the media. I liked reading about George and Betty and sure it might have rambled a bit here and there, but I thought it was good. A little long, but good. I wondered why there was no real resolution to the tension that builds as we all worry about "What's gonna happen to Betty?" George doesn't take us there. I suppose that's not necessarily a bad thing.I think George has tapped into a new vein of literature -- Baby Boomers coming home to take care of Mom and Dad in their last years. I've been through it, along with millions of others, and there is a comfort in knowing others are coping with the same issues and events.I guess I felt like there was an overarching sadness about George not being able to be who he truly is with his folks. I understand why. He didn't want to disappoint them. But still . . .George didn't have "the talk" with Betty. But he did get her to say "You could do worse" about the doctor. And that's something right there.
